In the last few months, Muslim women have been harassed and assaulted on being spotted with a Hindu man. A mob of men from the Muslim community descends upon them-in public- and in many cases forcefully takes off their niqab to videograph their face. 1/n
thequint.com/news/india/mus… In Meerut, two Muslim women were cornered in a busy market by a mob, the women insisted the man is their friend and colleague, but to no avail. The mob kept pulling down their niqabs and making their videos. 2/n

INVESTIGATION: Several Christian priests in UP have been arrested in last 3 years for forceful religious conversion. There’s just one problem. Many of these arrests go against the state’s anti-conversion law — the very law that the arrests are based on(!)
The UP anti-conversion law categorically states that only the aggrieved or their relative can file a complaint of forceful religious conversion. But in what seems to be a pattern across the state, many arrests are based on FIRs by third parties (mostly right wing vigilantes) Image

Mohd Zubair has often been shy of wearing the tag of a journalist, and yet on many days of the past year, his work has shaped the very news cycle. How did he go from running a parody account to becoming a news institution in himself? I profile Zubair here.
thequint.com/news/india/who… Speaking to @TheQuint, Magsaysay Awardee @ravishndtv said Zubair has been doing "what should have been the mainstream media's job", "at great personal risk".

A popular school in Bangalore has sent a mail to all its alumni asking them to go to maps and change the name of Gyanvapi mosque to “Gyanvapi Temple”

“You are requested to do it and ask our Hindu brothers and sisters to do it till google updates changes”
thequint.com/news/india/ben… I dug a little into other things the school (New Horizon Public School) has been up to. 2 months ago, they organised tickets for its students and staff for movie The Kashmir Files. The school made it *mandatory* for all the staff members to attend the movie screening. 2/n

Remember the 'Covid Jihad' propaganda run by mainstream media? Muslims in UP suffered hugely as a result. From pregnant Muslim women denied hospital entry, to Muslim-run businesses taking a hit as they're viewed with suspicion.

Fauzia, a weaver in Varanasi, was forced to deliver outside BHU hospital, as they wouldn't admit her, accusing her of "bringing Covid". Finally, when the nurse agreed to do her stitches, the taunts continued: "why do you people keep having babies"

Today is my last day @ThePrintIndia. I spent 3.5 years here, covering politics, people, society and human rights. From the anti-CAA movement to the Delhi carnage, from multiple state elections to the tragic Covid-19 waves, I learnt essential ground reporting here. Sharing some of my work here. My first major assignment here was co-leading a flagship project 'My543' in the run up to the 2019 elections— a 360degree analysis of India's 543 electoral constituencies and the work done by its MPs.

Reporting from Agra: Amit Jaiswal was an RSS worker followed by PM Modi on twitter. The huge poster of Modi that had adorned the back of his car for many years is now gone. His sister tore it off the day Amit died of Covid after their pleas went unheard. theprint.in/india/rss-work… "Amit ne poori zindagi PM modi ke liye nikal di. Modi ne uske liye kya kiya? Aise PM sahab ki humein kya zaroorat? Humne poster phaadh ke nikaal diya (Amit spent his entire life fighting for PM Modi. What did Modi do for him? We tore off his poster)"- Amit's family.

This time last year, 19 people part of the #antiCAA protests were killed in Uttar Pradesh. I'd travelled to various districts of the state which saw heightened violence, police brutality, and mass arrests. Here are some stories that tell the horror. Never forget.

Thread. 1/n 20-year-old UPSC aspirant Suleiman was shot dead in Bijnor, along with 21-year-old Anas whose son turned seven months old just a day after he was killed. 2/n
