In a sizable cohort of 89 acute patients, milder COVID-19 associated with early CD4 responses detected by both AIM and IFNg ICS. This confirms earlier studies with more limited patient numbers, and highlights the key relation of timing of CD4 responses to disease outcomes. (2/4)
This data further supports the notion that CD4 T cell responses are relevant for modulation of disease severity. Furthermore, mild disease was also associated with responses also recognizing additional SARS-CoV-2 sequences (beyond spike). (3/4)
The association of milder disease with polyantigenic responses is relevant in the context of potential vaccine designs incorporating additional components beyond spike, with the aim of increasing the breadth of T cell responses. (4/4)
