Discussing #Welfare today with a group.
Here are some basic facts:
In June 2020, TANF provided income to more than 2.1 million.

Most Temporary Assistance for Needy Families recipients are children. The June 2020 figures include 505,487 adults and over 1.6 million children.

In 2019, for instance, only 23% of the families with children living in poverty received TANF assistance, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

In 2020, the national median monthly assistance for a family of three with TANF benefits was $492 per month

At $492 per month nobody is able to live on TANF alone.

Supplemental Security Income provides extra cash to help low-income adults and children who live with disabilities. As of January 2021, more than 7.9 million people received an average of $585.53 per month.

Of people getting benefits, more than 6.7 million were blind or disabled

Conclusion: Although it is possible some people are abusing the system, it is not likely anybody wants to rely on TANF or SSI.

Those in real need are helped by these programs.

For three summers ending in 2019 I volunteered in upper Idaho to fix homes for people on SSI. All were victims of the lead poisoning caused by 100 years of silver/lead mining in the area. None of these victims were real happy with living on SSI but had no options.

Most had breathing disabilities. Almost all were white evangelical Christians. #MAGA people should remember that when they promote eliminating Social Security. All these people would die if not for SSI.
