#Apple #iPhoneX a rant:

Last year, I had the battery replaced in my iPhone X at an Apple authorized provider (Apple themselves had not yet reopened), as its capacity was diminished. Unbeknownst to me at the time was the fact that the servicer damaged the ambient light sensor 1/x
I didn't catch it at the time, but under the harsh fluorescents at work it didn't look right--like kinda washed out/bluish. In checking display settings, I no longer had True Tone available. I initiated a service call with Apple, who indicated I should backup, wipe, update, & 2/x
restore my phone. Which I did; it beib the 256GB model, and being about half-full, this took awhile™️. Like a full day; at the end of it? Still no True Tone. This is when I made a #GeniusBar appt. Fortunately for me, and despite being out of warranty, I'd had the battery 3/x
at an authorized service center... Two days before Apple themselves reopened their stores. So, I was fortunate that the authorized provider performed the service, & that Apple was open again for service appts. This is when I found out about the ambient light sensor being 4/x
damaged. Because the vendor's work carried a 90-day warranty Apple was able to swap my phone for an NIB iPhone X--which I then had to charge (remember: Apple was closed for months), setup, and restore. No complaints; it sucks, but that's the process. And the phone was rock 5/x
solid... Until #iOS 15.5; since, it's been nothing but #Springboard crashes, random reboots, and overheating. I don't even get the overheat warnings! I pull the phone out of my pocket only to frequently see the white spinner on a black screen... So I made a genius bar appt 6/x
They checked me in early, and actually started diagnostics before my scheduled appt time. I described the phone's behavior to the genius; he indicated that his internal diagnostics corroborated my account, and that because new software is optimized for new handsets my best 7/x
course of action would be to, you guessed it, backup, reset, reinstall, and restore. Now because the phone is officially out of warranty, and despite the fact that Apple's software is causing the problem, if I wanted to swap the handset at Apple I'd be looking at a $579 fee 8/x
for my trouble. And on a handset still officially supported by Apple! How is that right or fair? They made the problem, but want to charge me to fix it? Who do they think they are? Microsoft? Because that's who they're becoming. I'm a long-time Apple customer, supporter, and 9/x
Apple/Jamf admin in professional life.

To recap: prior to iOS 15.5, phone was rock-solid; afterwards, it routinely overheats, Springboard crashes, True Disappears (only to be restored by rebooting), will crash while simply scrolling Face, etc. I've literally had it crash 10/10
(sorry--should've been 10/11)
while on a phone call. I can't imagine this being all that good should I need to call 911/emergency services, right?
By the way, the best the genius could offer was "Maybe this will be patched in an upcoming release." Gee, really helps me now 11/11
