I love the fact that through all this pure madness, Jacob Rees-Mogg is still earnestly running a department looking for Brexit opportunities, like a sectioned Dickensian undertaker who has accidentally swallowed a flask of embalming fluid.

Any new Tory leader needs 3 overriding aims:

1) detoxify the venal Johnson political culture

2) restore respect for the office he tarnished

3) repair the UK’s image abroad

Grown up politics, essentially.

Then we can debate actual issues, instead of hollow personality cults.
There is a big window of opportunity to revive some civility in politics, particularly as Labour has returned to a team of grown ups. This means calm hands on the tiller, competent management, and an end to relentless culture warfare. It’s time to cool the temperature.
Tories I know (across the spectrum of right wing opinion) support this. There is a strong sense that however right or centrist the next leader, they will want to distance themselves as much as possible from this appallingly embarrassing and shameful episode in our history.

Rees-Mogg is on @Channel4News talking about Harold Macmillan and Lord Salisbury as if he’s just woken up stoned off his tits on snuff in the middle of a grouse moor, having lost his way to the funeral of a Victorian work house owner.
By contrast, @RhonddaBryant was absolutely superb, as you’d expect.
