At the end of 2021 I ended my 36 years in local government & came out of political retirement. Here’s my #Colchester 2022 review which turned out to be one helluva year. Solidarity & #HappyNewYear to all the wonderful new people I’ve got to know in the last twelve months. 1/14
JANUARY: A group of socialists visited Fratting Hall Farm, a former pacifist settlement nr. Colchester, founded during the Second World War in 1943. The painting of the barn which survives to this day was by local artist Roderick Barrett. History 👉… 2/14
FEBRUARY: Attended a #JohnsonOut rally organised by Brighton Trades Council. The message on the placard was one the stark messages of the protestors. 📷 BH Griffiths.

I love the fact that through all this pure madness, Jacob Rees-Mogg is still earnestly running a department looking for Brexit opportunities, like a sectioned Dickensian undertaker who has accidentally swallowed a flask of embalming fluid.

Truss still completely silent is she a hologram.
No interest in any ‘vox pops’ with people who voted for all this, to be honest.

The 2019 Conservative Party leadership contest saw Boris Johnson emerge as the winner, a year after he resigned as Foreign Secretary – in a disagreement with Cabinet colleagues over Brexit strategy.
Johnson was appointed Prime Minister by Elizabeth II on July 24, having given an untested assurance that he commanded a majority in the House of Commons. Johnson was widely distrusted, due to his serial dishonesty and incompetence, plus racist, sexist, and homophobic comments.

🧵With (some) Tory MPs finally acting against their corrupt sham of a PM*, it would be great to see current and former politicians of all allegiances joining @99Organisation.

🏘️Many politicians want to improve their communities
🧒& invest wisely in the future so today's children have a better life
💷& end mass impoverishment

😡Our increasingly polarising, vitriolic & corrupt Cabinet is good for almost no-one.

🚨It's very bad for 99% of us.

👩‍⚖️Johnson is the first serving PM to be found guilty of a criminal offence
🗑️He won't resign
🪧Our democratic rights are vanishing
🥣Most of us are getting poorer (largely due to Brexit & Govt bungling, compounded by COVID & war in Ukraine)
🪙 While Govt friends get richer

Johnson thread…

In February I discussed what I thought Johnson would do after #Partygate came to light. I said we were reaching a very turbulent time in politics,

I predicted that the man would never resign. I was right. Even when he received the FPN i said…1/
He still wouldn’t resign. I wish I was wrong but I wasn’t.

The other thing I said was he would change the laws that would mean he didn’t have to go. Again I was right.

My other prediction has me more scared than ever. I said a desperate man…. 2/
Would do desperate things to cling to power. So letters are going in to the 1922 committee. He’s going to get more desperate, he will promise his back benchers the world to keep favour example #ImperialMeasurements and lots of other small but damaging things for the Uk….. 3/

“[Johnson] is showing signs of being extremely impatient in regard to the constitutional constraints upon him. He gets angry if the courts or parliament try to interfere...'

- Ken Clarke, Nov '21 (…)

🚨 & now Johnson has rewritten the #MinisterialCode 🚨
- adding this clause:
1.7 Where the PM determines that a breach of the expected standards has occurred, he may ask the Independent Adviser for confidential advice on the appropriate sanction. The
final decision rests with the PM...
...Where the PM retains his confidence in the Minister, available sanctions include requiring some form of public apology, remedial action, or removal of ministerial salary for a period.

Now, Johnson alone decides the fate of any minister, including himself 🚨🚨🚨

Letter to my MP Matthew Offord #PartyGate #MinisterialCode #JohnsonOut

Dear Matthew,

Thank you for your letter dated 27th April, wherein you stated that 'there is currently no evidence' [that the PM misled the House of Commons], and that a vote of no confidence...
...'would [not] be helpful in advance of the Met Police completing their investigations and the release of Sue Gray's full report'. Now that the Met have completed their investigation & the report has been released, I am keen to hear how you intend to proceed.

We have irrefutable evidence that Boris Johnson lied to the House (in January & on 29th March). Johnson stated that he had been 'repeatedly assured...that there was no party...and that no rules were broken.' His statement was demonstrably untrue...

In a really shocking week, this is the most shocking story. Boris Johnson promised Parliament that the full report would be published. But the @thesundaytimes reveals that it was doctored by Downing Street officials. He lied to Parliament @RhonddaBryant #Partygate

I’d love to say I find this amusing. But in truth, I’m heartbroken.

I am heartbroken because I watched peoples loved ones die while they partied.

🧵 1/7
I am heartbroken because healthcare workers - including myself - risked their own lives to care for those Covid positive while they partied.

I am heartbroken because the conservatives made “extensive use” of emergency procurement contracts and misused £9BN pounds of taxpayers money to pay their mates for unsafe and unusable PPE, leaving healthcare workers exposed to a deadly virus.

It doesn't matter whether you tweet #Johnsonout or #JohnsonOut117 we are all after the same thing ,I'm not impressed by the obvious bullying and it is bullying naming what someone perceives as fake accounts or suggesting that one person has made said accounts why does it matter
It smacks of arrogance and jealousy we should all be working together for the cause our objective is for Johnson to go and the #SueGrayReport to be published in full ,fully unredacted I've seen so many people considering leaving twitter not for just this situation but bullying
Seems to be rife over twitter I understand we are angry and frustrated we all feel it but bullying is never OK I will never try and convince anyone I'm a real person anyone I interacts with me knows I am and the ones that don't they don't matter to me this is not my life let's

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is “tempting evil” with his statements about the training of Ukrainian troops abroad amid the conflict with Russia, Polish General Waldemar Skrzypczak, who advises the defense minister, said on Friday.
During a visit to India earlier this week, Johnson told journalists that “we are currently training Ukrainians in Poland in the use of anti-aircraft defense, and actually in the UK in the use of armored vehicles.”
Skrzypczak, who headed one of the multinational divisions in Iraq in the mid-2000s, told Polish newspaper Fakt that “when we were on missions abroad it was hard to imagine that one of the politicians would talk about our plans or training on television.”

Last week, the UK announced that it was eliminating all remaining tariffs and quotas on Ukrainian imports - something it was able to do because of Brexit. The reaction from Europhiles, and even some EU officials, has been telling - and not in a good way. A thread. 🧵 (1/9)
Background. In 2014, Ukraine and the EU (then of course including Britain) signed a deal eliminating most tariffs, but leaving some in place, especially in agri-foods. Britain inherited this deal on leaving. The remaining tariff schedules are here.… (2/9)
Since the Russian invasion, Kiev has been lobbying London and Brussels for the removal of the last tariffs and an easing of the more stringent border checks. This matters a lot, because Ukraine has lost its coastline. All its exports must now pass through EU territory. (3/9)

There is no government.

Everyone in it is dealing full time with either bullying or blackmailing, being bullied or blackmailed, or denying there’s any bullying or blackmailing.

This isn’t how you run a country facing vast challenges, mostly created by the very same people.
No EU countries are currently dealing with endless allegations about or formal enquiries into their governments’ lockdown breaking drunken antics. We look so bloody awful. Again. This regime has totally demolished our reputation as a serious nation. #JohnsonOut #JohnsonMustGo

This MP is a Brexiteer too, not exactly some left wing Tory rebel. Asks colleagues to go to the Police. Incredible.
A Tory committee chair asking his own colleagues to report his party to the police over blackmail and intimidation, would you like a different government yet?

Ending life-saving restrictions to protect your own income, power, and privilege is not "in the public interest." It is a transparent abuse of trauma and trust akin to a cult leader. You broke the rules, so now you're removing them for applause

Clownland, honestly, it is.
To be fair, in the case of Dowden I can actually believe this - he couldn’t find his way out of a paper bag.

Oliver Cromwell's speech of 1653 is appropriate:
'It is high time for me to put an end to your sitting in this place,
which you have dishonored by your contempt of all virtue, and defiled by your practice of every vice.
Ye are a factious crew, and enemies to all good government.
Ye are a pack of mercenary wretches, and would like Esau sell your country for a mess of pottage, and like Judas betray your God for a few pieces of money.
Is there a single virtue now remaining amongst you?
Is there one vice you do not possess?
Ye have no more religion than my horse. Gold is your God. Which of you have not bartered your conscience for bribes? Is there a man amongst you that has the least care for the good of the Commonwealth?
