to cap off my frenetic reading about the english civil war im watching the movie Cromwell (1970) with richard harris and alec guinness and it. is. AMAZING. and so goofy
within the first 10 minutes theyre contemplating war against the king and cromwell says "a civil war??? in england????"
the costumes are immaculate. also theres a certain trumpish resonance in a tyrant attacking his parliament
transphobia connects the entire fascist movement, it is its living tissue, and you have to defend trans people without caveat if you want to fight fascism in earnest
the idea that people could be happy outside the Procrustean bed of rigid roles stratified by gender, religion and race is a core threat to fascists and the rationale for their absolutely genocidal sentiment against trans people
if you've ever wondered at the vehemence of transphobia it is because of this: trans people who are happy show the viability of a different future, and the worthlessness of the calcified norms whose obsessive upkeep is the spine of the right and far right
as i slowly make my way through the report on sexual abuse in the Southern Baptist Convention, one thing strikes me very hard:
they didn't do proactive outreach to survivors at all
of 330 interviews, they interviewed 22 survivors
all of whom contacted them
this is an org with nearly 6,000 member churches
22 survivors, in total. 6 relatives of survivors.
also, the law firm in question claims on their website to have expertise in "faith based" investigations
Also, the psychologist they contracted as a Survivor Care Liason? advertises his practice as follows: "Quality care grounded in Christ at the pace you need"
