1. Tightened up topic clusters through internal links.
I was loose with what links to what in the early articles of building clusters.
So I went back and made sure all the internal links were relevant to clusters. That included links going in and out of clusters.

2. Further internal link cleanup by making sure anchor text was diversified and relevant.
I went through all the anchors to avoid over-optimizations, as well as making sure anchors were relevant to the clusters.
LinkWhisper made it easy to see and change anchors.

3. Added or replaced photos to be more 'original'
Some articles didn't have images or had stock images that were used in many places. I use DepositPhotos for stock, but can still get overused.
I search photos in Google Images to see if they're overused by others.

4. Re-optimized content
I checked the articles that previously had good rankings and traffic before the Update in @fraseHQ. Re-optimized the content for what Google thought is now "best".

5. Added author boxes to all the posts
The author boxes were really easy to design with @GeneratePress theme and @GenerateBlocks plugin. I did need to add a Simple Local Avatars plugin because I didn't feel like messing with Gravatar. I just wanted to upload author photo.

And that's it!
I didn't start making changes until the Update was announced to be completed on June 9th.
On July 7th, I started getting the same and even better rankings in some cases.

Google is continually making mini-updates, so there's always the risk of losing it all again.
There's also Google rolling back some parts of their May Update, so the sites recovered.
Either way, my sites and content are better than they were before originally getting hit.
