Notetaking: Documenting information and processes in chronological/hierarchal order, making it easier to follow the progression from one data element to the next. Examples of notetaking tools include evernote.com, obsidian.md and giuspen.net/cherrytree

Mind Maps: A form of visual notetaking that shows the relationships between individual pieces of information and the overall hierarchy/progression of an investigation in a tree-like structure.
Some useful mind map tools are mindmup.com and xmind.net

Network Visualization: Depicts networks of connected entities as nodes (data points) and links (connections). This method provides a record of ties between entities of interest as well as possible new leads.

Tools include spiderfoot.net/hx and gephi.org

Screen Captures: Taking and saving a snapshot of all or part of your visible screen, using the Print Screen key or a tool such as getgreenshot.org, or capturing the full length/width of the screen using a tool like GoFullPage chrome.google.com/webstore/detai…

Page Captures: Preserving a web page on your own system by taking a (functional) snapshot.
This can be done by right-clicking and saving as a webpage or by using a tool such as Save As MHTML add0n.com/save-as-mhtml.… to package the page into one file and download it.

Content Download: Saving online data/files may preserve critical evidence and provide clues.

Downloads may be available directly on a site, via the site’s API or source code, or using tools such as en.savefrom.net, downloadhelper.net and imgdownloader.com

Site Archiving: The process of collecting web pages and their assets and preserving them in a lasting, searchable online digital repository.

Platforms such as archive.org/web and archive.ph enable on-demand archiving and search/retrieval.

Note that these documentation methods are not mutually exclusive and are often used in conjunction with each other.

Applying good documentation to your investigative/research process will yield retraceable processes and accessible content/evidence.
