As ex-minister for women and equalities @PennyMordaunt is well known amongst women as a strong supporter of self-ID. Now she’s running for leader she’s trying to rewrite history.
“I’ve never supported self-ID” /2
Her belief that “transwomen are women’ is so strong she’s said it from the dispatch box in Parliament.
Now it’s only that “some” transwomen are women. And then only “in law”, they are of course not really a woman like she is.
She now claims she’s been raising concerns for years, speaking out about sport, and pushing to remove ‘people who are pregnant’ from maternity legislation.
Disingenuous spin. This is pure gaslighting. Does she think we are fools? /4
Last year I travelled to Switzerland to join a policy meeting about trans inclusion in sport. Senior reps from all the main sports were there, so was the IOC. In a room of 30+ I was the only person arguing for safety and fairness for women and girls /1
For 8 long hours I argued every point. Some were cross with me. Some dismissed me. Some told me not to speak. Some told me not to use the word male when I speak about transwomen. I carried on. Saying the things they didn't want to face up to. /2
Some refused point blank to talk with me at the break. Some wouldn't sit with me at lunch. A few (women) told me I was brave. Others (men) told me I should modify my language if I want people to listen to me. I carried on. Saying the things they didn't want to hear /3
WHY I DO WHAT I DO. Three years ago a friend told me about some discussions happening on mumsnet. Women were getting called ‘terfs’ and ‘transphobic’ for saying men can’t be women and lesbians don’t have a penis. I was bemused and intrigued /1
I read lots, watched Magdalen Burns, joined some on-line groups, spoke to friends. I peak trans’ed. I saw no transphobia - these were the real-life concerns of women and the conflict of rights was obvious. /2
As a scientist I wanted to see the evidence behind why women’s concerns had been dismissed. I was shocked to find there wasn’t any. Even the most basic facts were missing. There was nothing behind the slogans /3
