1:
When an instinctive reaction is simultaneously good and bad - THREAD:

After Mo Farah’s recent revelation, many of us instinctively applauded the Home Office as they delivered their lightning speed verdict of ‘no action’ against him.
2:
This in itself was a positive move. However, it highlights the blatant hypocrisy of their standard treatment towards victims of trafficking, refugees or asylum seekers…

If we are to be COMPLETELY HONEST, they're not the only hypocrites in this situation.
3:
As a society, WE also need to take responsibility for our support of the HO in this instance versus our usual complacency to their persecution. But it's tricky, this ‘instinct’ or involuntary emotion of empathy in certain instances - it's exceptionalism.

Let's unpack...
4:
The #HostileEnvironment policies are upheld through successive governments exploiting this aspect of our natures.

Of course the lions share of blame belongs to governments whose number one aim is ALWAYS to retain power, colonial 'divide & rule’ tactics proving ever useful.
5:
And although it’s great so many were instinctively pleased the HO chose mercy for Mo, it’s this initial reaction of immediate recategorisation of people into 'other' which is so wrong, as it enables and gate-keeps all the hostility inflicted upon those who are othered.
6:
Please spare a moment and reflect as 'IMMIGRANTS SHOULDN’T NEED TO BE EXCEPTIONAL TO BE ACCEPTED.'

metro.co.uk/2022/07/13/imm…
7:
It’s the #HostileEnvironment policies which deny PoC, refugees, asylum seekers and victims of trafficking their human rights and human dignity.

And it's the complacency and willingness of the majority to be emotionally manipulated by a hostile government that enables this.
8.
And unfortunately, rights won’t be gifted to those of us in minority groups - they’ll have to be fought for…not only from the government, but from the sweeping majority who don't think critically about their perspectives and become unwitting enforcers of government hostility.
9:
This is a moment Hussein (Mo) will never forget, and it was a great result for him.

However, the non-exceptional everyday victims are still in desperate need of a movement to support them, as government policies are stacked against them.
10.
We must also acknowledge we have on some level allowed the #HostileEnvironment to not only take form but to remain in existence.

The 2013 ‘Go Home’ vans were not only nasty, they were a crucial marketing tool. And too many bought the hostility they were selling.
11:
For those still pondering or questioning why we need this moment to become a movement, consider the following:

The reality of the situation is explained here by @BellaSankey

12:
As Lester Holloway @brolezholloway explains, that involuntary emotion of empathy we described above is ‘exceptionalism.’ - ‘We need humanity & empathy for all.’

13:
But how can we achieve this? We can rely on the government to oppose and undermine humanitarian efforts. There have been many recent analyses on all the current remaining Tory candidates including our own,

14:
The Tory candidates are pretty uniform re the #HostileEnvironment: ‘no change and they’re intent on continuing with Rwanda policy.’

Therefore we appeal and call upon Hussein Abdi Kahin @Mo_Farah to make this a movement and not let it become merely a ‘moment’ in history.
15:
@Mo_Farah we hope you will lend a hand to highlight STATE RACISM, and use your platform to help educate and inform.

WE THE PEOPLE must counter the #HostileEnvironment we've enabled for too long, and we need all the help we can get!

Show Mo some solidarity in the replies ✊

IT’S RACIST, IT’S ILLEGAL & IT’S IMMORAL...

THREAD:

All the Tory candidates still believe Britain can dump people into another country thousands of miles away. The squatter in 10 Downing Street was at least hoping the policy was politically right...

The UK is a beacon of “openness and generosity” – Boris Johnson in April, a bit rich as this couldn’t be any more contradictory whilst vehemently implementing the #Rwanda policy which was controversial from word go... and now:

LIZ TRUSS SUGGESTS SENDING ASYLUM SEEKERS TO TURKEY…

And the Turkish government shot down her idea within hours of it being floated.

Considering Turkey already has the largest refugee population in the world. The Turkish government responded swiftly:

We wanted to step up and show our support for the @Care4Calais #StopRwanda campaign.

The way Britain treats refugees and asylum seekers is part of the #HostileEnvironment, that led to the #NationalityAndBordersAct. We are pleased to support action to mitigate against it.

We want to see the success of this campaign and all others that aim to challenge the deliberate cruelty of the #HostileEnvironment and are proud to work with and alongside organisations and individuals who make this their goal.

The #HostileEnvironment consists of a set of policies and laws made to make it unbearable for some people to live in Britain. Originally intended to deter 'illegal immigrants', the plans backfired, throwing all non-White people into harm's way.

Yesterday's breaking news showed Raab had copied Patel in ducking out of being grilled at committee appearances.

news.sky.com/story/dominic-…
Allegedly due to 'competing demands' in the run up to Westminster Summer Holidays (recess), Priti Patel gave notice of her no-show last Wednesday at close of business the day before.

But surely accountability to Parliament should be a priority?

By the time September rolls around, and the cabinet have been shuffled into new roles, who knows what further scandals might take the heat off the quest for accountability .

Since its introduction in 2012 as part of the #HostileEnvironment, the NRPF policy has been found to be unlawful FIVE TIMES 🚨🚨🚨

The NRPF policy continues to breach multiple aspects of basic decency and humanity as written into various laws.
1/4
dpglaw.co.uk/home-offices-n…
Over a million people in the UK are affected by NRPF, which largely affects people with temporary visas, such as students. In the Covid lockdowns, many were unable to work or get financial aid, some were left starving or lost their homes as a result.

citizensadvice.org.uk/about-us/our-w…
The policies that make up the #HostileEnvironment are intentionally cruel, causing deliberate hardship to people who are, by and large, just trying to live their lives and get on in society.

Perhaps this sums it up best?

Modern slavery rings hidden in plain sight - a care work scandal.

Investigations have uncovered dozens of illegal recruitment agencies (at the time of publication), exploiting migrant care workers.

theguardian.com/world/2022/jun…
Workers, unable to speak up as their employment was tied to their visa, have been charged as much as £18k for spurious processing fees by international-law-breaking recruitment agencies, The Guardian reported last month.
2/10
Suspected victims had money deducted from their wages, their passports and residence permits held to ransom until they have worked off their debt.

This despicable practice has not sprung up overnight - this is well-established exploitation.

We made a little collection of Tory perspectives on refugees, asylum seekers, and the #Rwanda policy. One of these people may be our next PM!

Starting with Rishi Sunak, who has consistently voted against a more accessible, supportive asylum system, he’s evil as they come…

Penny Mordaunt, following her Twitter posts from yesterday, she is best summed up by @WilksBecca
"Some have tried to paint me as marginally less monstrous than the other candidates - Let me assure you, they are wrong."

Liz Truss takes a leaf out Johnson’s book as she has been accused of lying about the horrendous #Rwanda policy, but she doesn't have any better ideas…
