This is the topical map I created for a new niche site that's had a great start.

The big branch with 42 articles is where I started.

Here's my topic/keyword research process for new sites:

1/

M1 Update:

#nichesites #topicalmaps Image
To preface the steps, think of this as a site about dogs. Easier to 'see' with an example.

The general niche is "dogs" and all the branches are the various topics about dogs.

The topical map shows where I can go for the next couple of years at least.

2/
1. I start by researching the topics that I need to cover to be a Topical Authority.

I use many sources to create a complete list of topics and clusters - Competitors, Wiki, Google, etc.

Topics include: breed, food, toys, bedding, training, reproduction, lifespan, etc...

3/
2. I perform broad keyword research across all the topics, so I understand what the top-level keywords are for the topics.

Then I dive deeper into sub-topics.

dog food
dog food for puppies
dog food for puppies with allergies

4/
3. I dive deeper and deeper. I start looking at the SERPs for the general competition for the topics.

For topics that are looking 'easier', I'll continue going deeper into topic/keyword research until I find the subtopics that I can build out into clusters.

5/
4. I fill out the mind map version of the topical map, while also doing the same thing within my keyword research and content management spreadsheet.

6/ Image
5. I start narrowing down the topics that will be easier for me to start with.

I pick one of the topics and create a full cluster (silo) around them.

It will include 1 pillar page and many supporting articles.

7/
In my latest niche site, it was 1 pillar and 41 supporting articles.

The pillar page is one that I don't expect to rank for a long time. It's usually a high Search Volume and the most competitive in the cluster.

Many people say "don't go after high SV keywords."

8/
I say you can go after high SV keywords if you have a plan for it.

But still expect it to rank slow until your site's overall authority builds high enough.

The pillar was a 4400 SV keyword.

It started getting search impressions on 7/10 at the 1-month mark.

9/ Image
Another big bonus is laying out a blueprint for months-years of content for you to write.

As Google starts to rank the site and content, it's giving you hints of what topics to go after next.

In my view, this is the best use of my time and money when starting a site.

10/
I've helped others create topical maps, and it really helps them get better results for their money. It speeds up how fast new sites can rank.

This also works for current sites. Filling out current topics and helping that content rank better due to better authority.

11/
1 more day spent researching topics/keywords could mean saving weeks of "waiting for Google" to index/rank the articles, as well as the time/money spent on creating extra content.

Is the process a lot of work? Yes!

Is it worth it? Yes!

My 2 sites that were hit in the Google May Core update have regained all the traffic and are still climbing!

Here's what I did...

Not Included:
- Building backlinks
- Publishing new content

#SEO #NicheSite

1/
1. Tightened up topic clusters through internal links.

I was loose with what links to what in the early articles of building clusters.

So I went back and made sure all the internal links were relevant to clusters. That included links going in and out of clusters.

2/
2. Further internal link cleanup by making sure anchor text was diversified and relevant.

I went through all the anchors to avoid over-optimizations, as well as making sure anchors were relevant to the clusters.

LinkWhisper made it easy to see and change anchors.

It seems like Google had another mini-update a couple of days ago because the two sites that were hit have started to recover their previous rankings.

The main "fixes" I made after the update was announced to be completed...

1/ ImageImage
1. Cleaned up interlinking, so that anchor text was diversified.

2. Tightened up silos with interlinking. Links needed to be more relevant.

3. Added or replaced photos to be more 'original'.

2/
4. Adjusted and optimized content where needed.

5. I added author boxes to all the posts.

I haven't had the time to do this to every article either. I first focused on the ones that were previously ranking.

I used to have a lot of bots scraping my sites to make copies of it. It was a constant cat and mouse game.

But I was able to set up WordPress to stop those scrapers and I haven't had to chase down any sites for a year.

Here's what I did...

1/
I install the Wordfence plugin and use their Rate Limiting tool.

That limits how fast visitors (bots and humans) can make requests and view pages.

This has also helped save the server's resources for actual visitors.

The screenshot contains my settings...

The numbers may be different depending on your site and server setup.

Check out Wordfence's article on Rate Limiting for more info: hapy.link/8cra

As for site speed, Wordfence can slightly slow your site down, but it's mostly neglible for me.
