As many as 819 personnel of the Army, Navy & IAF have died by suicide in the last five years, apart from cases of “fratricide”, which once again underlines the need for better suicide prevention and stress management policies in the over 14-lakh strong armed forces. #SuicideWatch
The 12-lakh Army lost 642 soldiers to suicides in the last five years, while the number was 148 in IAF and 29 in Navy, said minister of state for defence Ajay Bhatt, in a written reply in Rajya Sabha. #SuicideWatch
As reported by TOI earlier, the defence establishment has taken some stress management measures but clearly much more needs to be done, with over 150 soldiers, airmen and sailors taking their lives every year. #SuicideWatch

Defence minister @rajnathsingh has approved the policy on archiving, declassification and compilation/publication of war/operations histories by the Ministry of Defence. #WarHistory
The policy envisages that each organisation under the MoD like the Services, Integrated Defence Staff, Assam Rifles & Coast Guard will transfer the records, including war diaries, letters of proceedings & operational record books to MoD’s History Division
The responsibility for declassification of records rests with the respective organisations as specified in the Public Record Act 1993 and Public Record Rules 1997, as amended from time to time: MoD

In yet another indication the government is all set to announce the name of the country’s first-ever chief of defence staff #CDS, a pre-scheduled ceremony for the ceremonial transfer of the baton of chairman of chiefs of staff committee was deferred at the last minute on Friday.
Outgoing Army chief General Bipin Rawat, who completes his three-year tenure on December 31, was supposed to hand over the baton to Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh at the ceremony on Friday. “But it has been deferred to December 31,” said an official.
CoSC comprises the Army, Navy and IAF chiefs, with the senior-most of them acting as the ``rotational’’ chairman till he retires. But with the Cabinet approving the CDS post & its charter on Dec 24, General Rawat is widely considered to be the frontrunner for the position.

Andaman Nicobar Command chief Vice Admiral Bimal Verma has once again moved the armed forces tribunal (AFT) to challenge his supersession for the Navy chief’s post after the defence ministry failed to respond to his statutory complaint within 10 days.
Vice Adm Verma, in New Delhi to attend the naval commanders’ conference inaugurated by defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman today, had earlier on April 9 withdrawn his petition after AFT told him to follow due procedure by first lodging his statutory complaint with the MoD
The government on March 23 had announced that Eastern Naval Command chief Vice Admiral Karambir Singh, who is six months junior to Vice Admiral Verma, will take over as the next Navy chief from Admiral Sunil Lanba after he retires on May 31.
