In Breda historic centre, streets are mostly organized according to the following hierarchy of priority: pedestrians > bikes > motorbikes > cars > trucks:
The most vulnerable (and least dangerous) come first, the rest are more or less tolerated during limited hours.
As bicycles go, most Dutch bikes have a stand and an in-built locker, so they can park anywhere.
However, the city offers many bike racks, as well as secured and free bike parking lots ! 😍
✅ In terms of bike accessibility, both Breda and Nijmegen stations have fully operational elevators and access ramps.
⚠️ For each portion of travel, a bike ticket (fietskaart) must be purchased in addition to the regular ticket.
⚠️ The main problem in Dutch train stations comes from the access gates when travelling w @Interrail fare.
❌ Unfortunately, the bike ticket QR code does not open the access gates.
Regarding access onboarding, the Intercity between Breda & Nijmegen is similar to the one btw. Antwerp & Breda:
✅ various bike spaces in the train
❌ big steps to climb & no help by staff
⚠️ no need to book a bike slot, but space might lack
So, bike accessibility in the historic centre is modified:
❌ bikes are forbidden unless held by hand
✅ public free bike parking spaces can be found everywhere
Outside of the city centre, moving around by bike is super convenient and safe :
✅ red bikes lanes & direction signs to navigate easily
✅ in roundabouts, the bike lane is separated from motorized traffic
✅ cars & trucks give way to bikes
In the 25km bike leg from Nijmegen 🇳🇱 to Kleve 🇩🇪, safe & comfy cycling prevailed on both sides of the border.
In Germany, bikes lanes are not always red, but that's the main difference.
Oh, and this time also, there was an unused train line near the border @jonworth !

The day started w/ a bad surprise: the 8:59 IRE to Schaffhausen was not the usual accessible 2-level train but a 1-level train w/ high steps : how wise is it to plan such inadequate fleet on a busy vacation day @DBRegio_BW ?
@DBRegio_BW A stop in Schaffhausen gave a first taste of the excellent 🇨🇭 bike/train accessibility:
- ramps in all train stations,
- bike map of the city in the station,
- signs for the main bike routes
- most streets allowed to bikes
👏 @ECFEuroVelo@SchweizMobil@schaffhausench
So, how to quickly reach Plochingen from Möhringen, at peak hour, w/ a bike? 🤔
❌ Not by bike (too far away)
❌ Not by metro (bikes not admitted at peak hour)
✅Fortunately, in Stuttgart S-Bahn trains accept bikes at peak hour 🎉 @VVS
➡️ S1 -> Plochingen was the saviour!
- Long trajet (700km) jusqu'à Stuttgart en ICE🚄
Since the ICE only leaves at 1pm, it leaves time for a bike tour of Hamburg! 😍
🚴♀️ In 2015 I had already "toured" the city by bike... at full speed during the triathlon.
🐌 So this time I take it slow near the inner lakes and harbor! (...)
The city is very bike-friendly:
- the streets all around the Binnenalster and Aussenalster lakes give priority to bikes,
- everywhere the bike paths painted in red make it very easy to find one's way, even near traffic-heavy streets.
