Rule of law in Hungary: I have been investigated by our data protection authority because of my reporting on #Pegasus surveillances and after a complaint by an intelligence officer who was likely the spyware's operator. Story & documents (in 🇭🇺): media1.hu/2022/07/20/viz…

Thread👇
2/ As part of our #Pegasus surveillance investigations at @direkt36, I wrote a story on probably the most unlikely target: an intelligence officer at the Special Service for National Security (SSNS), which conducts secret surveillance and interceptions. direkt36.hu/en/kemszoftver…
3/ I had doubts that he was a real target, and well-informed sources told me that this guy probably just operated Pegasus, and entered his own number while trying to test the spyware. But we easily identified him because someone saved his name, title and position in CallApp (LOL)
4/ During my reporting, I called the intel officer on the phone & talked. He sounded sad, shy, even a bit humiliated. He didn't hung up, listened to me explaining how we identified him, and evetually told that "if it's true what you're saying, you understand why I can't comment".
5/ After our conversation, I also sent him an email outlining what I'm planning to write about him, and asked for comments, again.

Crickets.

Months later, it turned out that he filed a complaint with the Hungarian data protection authority, which started investigating me.
6/ The intel officer - who has an expertise in spywares - alleged that I obtained and handled his personal data (name, phone number, email, his workplace & position) in an unlawful way and that caused him serious concern.

This was a real "you must be kidding" moment for me.
7/ Well, it wasn't that surprising, actually. The Hungarian data protection authority had already exonerated the Hungarian government from allegations of illegal surveillance & claimed that even journalists, lawyers, opposition politicians were legitimate targets of the spyware.
8/ Moreover, the 🇭🇺data protection authority filed criminal complaints against unknown perpetrators, basically saying that the #PegasusProject could have committed serious crimes such as hacking or spying when obtaining the leaked database of potential targets' phone numbers.
9/ This investigation against me was a separate one, launched in March and ended in July. I told the authority in detail how we handle information and how we identified the intel officer using open source stuff like CallApp and Pipl. They finally acknowledged I did nothing wrong.
10/ However, the authority fell short in also acknowledging that it's essential for journalists - especially investigative journalists - to collect and handle data of people whom they are reporting on.

It's just really absurd that someone is probed because of doing journalism.
11/ It's even more absurd that after I've been surveilled with #Pegasus spyware for 7 months and then participated in the #PegasusProject uncovering how the Orbán government was spying on journalists, media company owners, lawyers etc. I'm the one coming under such a probe.
12/ Finally, please also read and share our original reporting in how Pegasus was used in Hungary. 🙏direkt36.hu/en/leleplezodo…

NEW: During the US presidential election in 2016, Russian hackers used a Hungarian gov't computer to disguise international data traffic needed for attacks against the US. Then it all happened again in 2020.

Orbán's reaction? 🤷‍♂️.

My new @direkt36 story: direkt36.hu/en/nyugati-szo…
2/ This was our original story uncovering the Russian hackings of the Hungarian foreign ministry's IT networks. At the time, the government called my reporting a 'campaign lie'. A few days later, both PM Orbán & his MFA acknowledged the Russian hacking.🤷‍♂️
3/ Reactions to our story:

”We have previously warned Hungary and other NATO Allies about the potential for Russia to conduct malicious cyber activity against the United States and our Allies and partners.” @usembbudapest

Worrying rumours circulate as Viktor Orbán is assembling his next government, which could be his most pro-Kremlin ever with multiple ministers having close Russian ties. Hungary's foreign policy, military, national security & cyber defense apparatus could all be affected. Thread. Image
2/ First, I want to emphasize that these are rumours and information originating from sources not in the PM's inner circle, but from the apparatus itself that could be affected. Some of these information are pretty new, others are floating around for quite some time now.
3/ Orbán himself confirmed that MFA Péter Szijjártó will stay in his cabinet. However, there are longtime rumours that he'd get a promotion/extra responsibilities either as deputy prime minister or by overseeing a bigger portfolio. He's also regarded as the PM's prospective heir. Image

🇪🇺Today, the European Parliament's #Pegasus inquiry committee will start its work.

9 months ago, #PegasusProject - a consortium of journalists led by @FbdnStories - uncovered systematic abuses with NSO Group's Pegasus spyware. One of these abusers was Orbán's Hungary.

🧵Thread
2/ Hungary was the first EU member state where we found that multiple journalists and media company owners were surveilled with the Israeli spyware. Orbán's gov't neither confirmed nor denied anything. Here's our in-depth @direkt36 article with @andraspe: direkt36.hu/en/leleplezodo…
3/ Later, we published more articles on surveilled journalists. One of them, Brigitta Csikász is a Hungarian investigative journalist mostly covering the justice system and crime. During her surveillance, for example, she wrote about misuse of EU funds.

📊Analyses of Hungary’s election find that far-right opposition voters previously supporting Jobbik were unwilling to back the six-party opposition’s United for Hungary coalition. Instead, 2/3 of them either voted for Orbán’s populist Fidesz or the neo-fascist Our Homeland party. ImageImage
2/ Jobbik, Hungary’s former strongest opposition party tried to transform itself from far-right into moderate right. They allied themselves with left-wing & liberal forces but lost most voters along the way. 800K opposition voters swinged to Orbán & Jobbik offshoot Our Homeland.
3/ Sunday’s election pushed Hungarian politics deep into populist right-wing and far-right territory, a real time travel back to the 1930s/40s from the perspective of our parliament. Out of 199 MEPs, we’ll have 135 Fidesz, 9 Jobbik & 7 Our Homeland MEPs. That’s 76% right-wing.

‼️👀Bags of partly burnt mail ballots for the Hungarian election were found in Romania near a motorway on Wednesday. Some ballots show support for the opposition.

Orbán granted voting rights to the neighbouring Hungarian diaspora. They can vote by mail.
telex.hu/kozelet/2022/0…
2/ There's also video footage by local journalist Cristian Teodorescu working for pontmaros/punctul. He was notified by a reader that there are bags of filled Hungarian ballots half-burnt at a landfill near Marosvásárhely/Târgu Mureș, Romania:
3/ Teodorescu told Transtelex that he called the police.

There's no information yet on how these ballots got there and what is the exact amount of ballots affected.

‼️🇷🇺Hungary’s latest Russia scandal: @direkt36 reveals that Orbán’s foreign ministry has been compromised by an ongoing Russian cyberespionage campaign. They even hacked the encrypted channel also transmitting confidential NATO & EU material.

👇THREAD.👇
direkt36.hu/en/putyin-hekk…
2/ When MFA Péter Szijjártó received the Order of Friendship from Sergey Lavrov - awarded by Putin himself - he already knew well that his ministry has been completely hacked by Russia.

He didn’t confront the Russians but praised Moscow and their great cooperation with Hungary.
3/ The Russian infiltration of Hungary’s MFA was fully discovered by the second half of 2021. Nevertheless, Orbán’s government continued with their pro-Russian policies and hid the cyberspionage from the public. Cyberattacks were still coming in January, internal documents show.
