What can we take away from the happenings in #Kati this morning and the attacks yesterday in different parts of the #Mali?
A short thread /
Since the beginning of the 2022 #FAMa is doing extensive military operations in the center of Mali. Most likely with Russian support. Official communication celebrates these missions and promises a swift end of the insecurity 2/
Meanwhile Malian and international #humanrights activists criticise the violence against the civilian population in these areas as well as the sustainability of these engagements 3/
The momentarily effectiveness of the #FAMa engagement can’t be denied but the question remains if the liberated areas can be hold, so far we don’t see many positive examples on that front. It has to be noted that these processes take time to establish themselves 4/
With the ongoing military operations it seemed like #JNIM, the Al Qaida group that is one of the primary actors of violence in the area, was under pressure. Some assumed they maybe won’t make it long. The group itself declared they are out for revenge 5/
Yesterdays coordinated attacks in the six different places in the Mopti and Koulikoro regions showed that JNIM is far from finished. The clear coordination and targeting of military institutions show also a clearly who these attacks are aimed for 6/
If it is true that #JNIM is responsible for todays attack on #Kati, the military stronghold close to Malis capital Bamako, it becomes clear that the group can’t be underestimated and is even willing to attack the #FAMa on their hometurf 7/
The radical military approach by #FAMa to secure the center is nothing new. We’ve seen the same tactics by FAMa and French early on in the crisis. Back than it didn’t work and it seems like we have a similar situation now 8/
Military can only be one pillar of a successful securitisation process. It also needs functioning education, presence of authorities and possibilities to invest in the future. Without it, the breeding ground for insecurity stays, no matter how many villages are “liberated” 8/
For the transitional government that legitimises itself through its security agenda these attacks not just mean physical but maybe also structual danger. How long can they hold power if it becomes clear that the insecurity will not go away? 9/

Shootings in Kati, not far from #Bamako in the early morning ours of friday. Unclear what's going on. Yesterday we saw several coordinated attacks on different military installations by armed groups in some regions of #Mali. This could be part of it but nothing knows yet.
So far it is very unclear what is happening in #Kati, just several km outside of #Bamako. Both a potential coup and an attack are both being discussed as possibilities. Lots of rumours floating around without anything substantial besides shaky camera videos.
