While many of my friends are out celebrating pride here in Berlin today, I’m standing by at home to report on whether @DrTedros declares the global monkeypox outbreak that is affecting the MSM community a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC).
It should be a reminder that our health - like our freedom to love, marry and have sex - is not something guranteed, it is something we have to keep advocating and fighting for.
So thank you to those who have chosen to communicate hoenstly and clearly in the last two months even when that was hard and especially those who have talked about their own experience with #monkeypox.
As a science journalist specializing in infectious diseases, as a gay man and as someone living with HIV, I have found the hesitancy of some in public health and in our own community to clearly communicate about the risk to MSM supremely unhelpful.
I won’t guess at the motives: Callousness and cowardice can end up looking the same, for instance. And many people may be honestly worried about unintended consequences.
But let me say this very clearly:
