First leg of the day: 330 km by IC 🚞 to Hamburg.
To secure a spot for the bike and be sure to board, I had reserved a bike slot.
When boarding the IC, a good surprise: a car fully setup for bikes, with about 20 slots, staff to help and seats in the other half of the car.
Like for seats, for each bike slot, the in & out stations were mentioned.
The best bike setup in a train seen sofar on this trip ! Well done @DB_Bahn ! 👏👍
The last 5km section to Hbf is much safer and with more frequent direction signs.
Once in Hbf, elevators are functional and the RE to Lübeck has the usual (not bookable) bike section, accessible from the platform without stairs. 👍 @DBregi
Along the whole route, the signs pointing to Hamburg centre were sparse, and thereare none about Eurovelo 3: a GPS is necessary!
This was a very surprising contrast with Eurovelo 15 in Niederrhein and should really be improved @ECFEuroVelo .
The first 5 km, crossing the old harbor bridge then in a natural reserve are very peaceful.
Then it becomes hardcore: the bike lane runs along a 2×3 lane highway without a barrier in between, then along the highway bridge. Quite a scary section !
The last 5km 🚴♀️ section to Hbf is much safer and with more frequent direction signs.
Once in Hamburg Hbf, elevators are functional and the RE 🚞 to Lübeck has the usual (not bookable) bike section, accessible from the platform without stairs. 👍 @DBRegio_SH
Once in Skandinavienkai, the GPS indicates the route to the ferry terminal. But once there, there is no infrastructure for bikes: the lines to the ferries look like a highway. Pretty bike-unfriendly @finnlin
I decide to shorten my bike tour of the city.
The last goal of the day is to reach the ferry terminal in Travemünde.
There is 1 RB every hour; due to a confusing platform display, there is a doubt until the very last minute that the 19:03 train is ever going to come.
Once in Skandinavienkai, my GPS indicates the route to the ferry terminal.
But once there, there is no road infrastructure for bikes: the lines to the ferries look like a highway. Pretty bike-unfriendly @finnlines_group !
We wait 30 mins without shelter. What if it rains?
@finnlines_group The boarding opens 1h30 before departure; bikes and motorbikes board first. We are requested to wear the yellow jackets provided and follow the staff car to the ferry.
We ride a lsteep metal ramp to deck 3, where we fasten our bikes, then go to our cabin.
At 9:45 PM we leave! 🚢

The day started w/ a bad surprise: the 8:59 IRE to Schaffhausen was not the usual accessible 2-level train but a 1-level train w/ high steps : how wise is it to plan such inadequate fleet on a busy vacation day @DBRegio_BW ?
@DBRegio_BW A stop in Schaffhausen gave a first taste of the excellent 🇨🇭 bike/train accessibility:
- ramps in all train stations,
- bike map of the city in the station,
- signs for the main bike routes
- most streets allowed to bikes
👏 @ECFEuroVelo@SchweizMobil@schaffhausench
So, how to quickly reach Plochingen from Möhringen, at peak hour, w/ a bike? 🤔
❌ Not by bike (too far away)
❌ Not by metro (bikes not admitted at peak hour)
✅Fortunately, in Stuttgart S-Bahn trains accept bikes at peak hour 🎉 @VVS
➡️ S1 -> Plochingen was the saviour!
- Long trajet (700km) jusqu'à Stuttgart en ICE🚄
Since the ICE only leaves at 1pm, it leaves time for a bike tour of Hamburg! 😍
🚴♀️ In 2015 I had already "toured" the city by bike... at full speed during the triathlon.
🐌 So this time I take it slow near the inner lakes and harbor! (...)
The city is very bike-friendly:
- the streets all around the Binnenalster and Aussenalster lakes give priority to bikes,
- everywhere the bike paths painted in red make it very easy to find one's way, even near traffic-heavy streets.
