It’s Sunday morning and the State of FL DOH has released their disgusting proposed transphobic rule that would BAN access to gender affirming care for those under the age of 18 & create restrictions for adults too.
They claim there is no evidence to support life saving gender affirming care & then ban it based on political ideology, not health.
As someone who helped to establish a gender affirming care program at PP & works w/#LGBTQ+ service providers & constituents I am disgusted by this.
Not just disgusted, I am enraged.
Because this rule being proposed is 100% the same as banning abortion.
You are getting in between a person and their doctor; & for all the anti-vaccine mandate ppl doing this (including DeSantis) you don’t care about freedom. At all.
DeSantis & Co are exploiting the fact that not every person understands gender affirming care. They are trying to divide marginalized communities & create political conflict. They are also going against the advice of leading medical groups.
I’ve seen this same political playbook before. GOP divides communities, promotes harmful disinformation & ultimately push people back into the closet & in harms ways.
1. The study is small, six cases were identified that supported a plausible association between GnRH agonist use and pseudotumor cerebri. Five minors were undergoing treatment for central precocious puberty and one for transgender care.
2. At the time of the FDA’s review, symptoms had resolved in three patients, were resolving in one patient, had not resolved in one patient, and one patient’s status was unknown. GnRH agonist therapy was discontinued in three patients; the other three were unknown.
“I want you to make his life a living hell....seriously,” FPL’s CEO Eric Silagy wrote in a 2019 email to two of his vice presidents about State Sen. José Javier Rodríguez, who proposed the legislation.
Within minutes, one of them forwarded the email to the CEO of Matrix, LLC, a powerful but little-known political consulting firm that has operated behind the scenes in at least eight states.
JJR was ousted from office in the next election w/a ghost candidate planted in his race.
Local elections too:
“Few examples are clearer than the case of South Miami. When the small South FL city’s mayor helped pass an ordinance in 2017 mandating rooftop solar panels on new construction, a network of 10 FPL-aligned operatives mobilized to ensure his ouster.”
Orange County crafted a Rent Stabilization Ordinance that is riddled w/loopholes & doesn't even include a full Tenant Bill of Rights, like we've seen in other counties. This is disappointing & deceitful, because it gives an impression that this might help when it probably won't.
🚩Section 25-384(b) allows rent to increase 9-10%
🚩Section 25-387 exempts thousands of struggling renters in single family units, mobile homes,
condos, and more.
🚩Section 25-388b offers an enforcement mechanism that won’t deter any landlord.
🚩Section 25-386a spells out the ways landlords and colluding elected officials can evade
accountability.
& then: Notice of Rent Increases (Amending Chapter 25 of the Orange County Code of Ordinances)
This part needs to be strengthened to include a full Tenant Bill of Rights.
“Meanwhile, Burgess pitched Matrix on even grander media ambitions, such as a $2 million plan to hire a trio of prominent journalists to lead a new publication — or even buying a chain of local papers, in order to use them as propaganda outfits.” orlandosentinel.com/politics/os-ne…
I really hope whoever this trio is speaks up & shares more of what happened.
Nothing changes for our planet or for our state if we operate in fear & remain silent in the face of this gross astroturfing & corporate driven status quo.
I don’t enjoy being one of the only electeds who speaks out on this crap.
I know it continues to put a big target on my back. I know it’s a wonky issue that at first glance folks might think it doesn’t impact them, but it does.
Hey Florida! This November, we're not just voting on politicians: we're also voting to retain or reject FIVE members of the Florida State Supreme Court! 🧵
The highest court in Florida is the Supreme Court, which is composed of seven justices. At least five Justices must participate in every case and at least four must agree for a decision to be reached. Learn more here: floridasupremecourt.org/Justices 2/
Justices are appointed by the Governor, and now for the fourth time, Governor Ron DeSantis will fill another vacancy on the Florida Supreme Court. 🫠 3/ news.wfsu.org/state-news/202…
NEW: Judge Cooper has issued 114 page order granting a temporary injunction on Florida’s 15 week abortion ban, which has no exceptions for rape, incest or human trafficking.
We expect DeSantis Administration to appeal & attorneys to fight again in court to get injunction back.
“The Court concludes that HB5 does not further the State’s interest in maternal health, but instead undermines that interest.” 👏👏
