Wow— some bad bills just signed into law by Governor DeSantis including:

1️⃣HB1417: Totally eliminates tenant protections put into place by local governments and preempts all of it to the State of Fl. 1/3 2️⃣HB1191: Opens up the door for phosphogypsum to be used in our roads (this bill was called Radioactive Roads for a reason) 2/3

So much attention on what's happening at @NewCollegeofFL but not enough attention of how this sits in the larger framework of attacks on higher-ed in Florida.

It didn't start with New College and it won't end w/New College. A thread of recent headlines to paint the picture. A bill hiding the identities of presidential search candidates for public colleges and universities in Florida was signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis last year with no fanfare or announcement until after it was complete.

I wonder why?

Many of our new followers might not know that I am first generation Iranian-American. And though I was born & raised in Orlando, I have a lot of family in Iran and right now there have been *months* of protests in Iran, of every day people calling for freedom & regime change. 1/4 [ID: These are images of #M...ImageImage Those who protest are risking their lives.

And this weekend was incredibly painful and sad: two men, #MohammadHosseini and #MohammadMehdiKarami were executed for participating in these freedom protests. 2/4

Spending my night watching @floridachannel clips from 2019. Here's an important quote from the Senate sponsor of the Amendment 4 bill:

“If they knowingly and intentionally applied to vote, and knowingly misrepresented their status, they could be subject to a felony.” Why is this important?

Because some Floridians think they are eligible to vote but aren't. So they register erroneously, not w/the intent to commit fraud but because they assume if they're doing something wrong, they'll be NOTIFIED about it.

Friendly reminder that puberty blockers are not just prescribed for gender affirming care; they’re also prescribed for central precocious puberty.

I’ve also seen this FDA update being cited by some to ban gender affirming care.

Some points to know 👇publications.aap.org/aapnews/news/2… 1. The study is small, six cases were identified that supported a plausible association between GnRH agonist use and pseudotumor cerebri. Five minors were undergoing treatment for central precocious puberty and one for transgender care.

It’s Sunday morning and the State of FL DOH has released their disgusting proposed transphobic rule that would BAN access to gender affirming care for those under the age of 18 & create restrictions for adults too. They claim there is no evidence to support life saving gender affirming care & then ban it based on political ideology, not health.

As someone who helped to establish a gender affirming care program at PP & works w/#LGBTQ+ service providers & constituents I am disgusted by this.

“I want you to make his life a living hell....seriously,” FPL’s CEO Eric Silagy wrote in a 2019 email to two of his vice presidents about State Sen. José Javier Rodríguez, who proposed the legislation.

& that’s exactly what they did. Important read 👇 orlandosentinel.com/news/os-ne-mat… Within minutes, one of them forwarded the email to the CEO of Matrix, LLC, a powerful but little-known political consulting firm that has operated behind the scenes in at least eight states.

JJR was ousted from office in the next election w/a ghost candidate planted in his race.

Orange County crafted a Rent Stabilization Ordinance that is riddled w/loopholes & doesn't even include a full Tenant Bill of Rights, like we've seen in other counties. This is disappointing & deceitful, because it gives an impression that this might help when it probably won't. 🚩Section 25-384(b) allows rent to increase 9-10%
🚩Section 25-387 exempts thousands of struggling renters in single family units, mobile homes,
condos, and more.
🚩Section 25-388b offers an enforcement mechanism that won’t deter any landlord.

“Meanwhile, Burgess pitched Matrix on even grander media ambitions, such as a $2 million plan to hire a trio of prominent journalists to lead a new publication — or even buying a chain of local papers, in order to use them as propaganda outfits.” orlandosentinel.com/politics/os-ne… I really hope whoever this trio is speaks up & shares more of what happened.

Nothing changes for our planet or for our state if we operate in fear & remain silent in the face of this gross astroturfing & corporate driven status quo.

Hey Florida! This November, we're not just voting on politicians: we're also voting to retain or reject FIVE members of the Florida State Supreme Court! 🧵 The highest court in Florida is the Supreme Court, which is composed of seven justices. At least five Justices must participate in every case and at least four must agree for a decision to be reached. NEW: Judge Cooper has issued 114 page order granting a temporary injunction on Florida’s 15 week abortion ban, which has no exceptions for rape, incest or human trafficking.

We expect DeSantis Administration to appeal & attorneys to fight again in court to get injunction back. This is the first page of the order “The Court concludes that HB5 does not further the State’s interest in maternal health, but instead undermines that interest.” 👏👏 This is a screenshot of the order with the text above

BREAKING: Judge rules that HB5, FL's 15 week abortion ban, is unconstitutional and violates the privacy provision of the State Constitution & he supports a temporary statewide injunction. His order will not happen until he signs it.

An important win for abortion rights in FL. .@GovRonDeSantis and his administration will appeal this decision because he is an extreme anti-abortion politician who thinks we should criminalize and ban abortion, and so we must KEEP FIGHTING and hold the line here in the State of Florida for women & pregnant ppl everywhere.

Devastating decision, huge loss for planet Earth and in large part due to the destructive influence of fossil fuel companies and utilities in America. It was the Republican Attorneys General Association that led the legal assault on the EPA, and they are heavily funded by special interests including fossil fuel-burning utilities.

As folks have already heard, Florida is reportedly the only U.S. state that hasn’t preordered COVID-19 vaccines for children under 5.

So what should FL parents do if they want their child(ren) to be vaccinated? 1/ Pharmacies such as CVS Health, Publix, Walmart, Walgreens, Winn-Dixie are enrolled in the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program, which means they order directly from the federal government and should not be impacted by the state’s lack of supply. 2/

What does the leaked draft #SCOTUS opinion mean for abortion access in Florida? 🧵 Well first off, Florida has been dramatically regressing when it comes to abortion access. In fact, this year alone the Governor signed HB5 into law, a 15 week abortion which is set to be implemented on July 1st pending a litigation that @ACLUFL has said they will file.

If anyone wants to have a serious conversation about how @GovRonDeSantis “challenges corporations” I’m happy to provide a full list of examples of how — despite his rhetoric — he’s funded by corporations and gives them tax breaks & policy wins every year. 🤓 Not sure if anyone volunteered to have a serious conversation with me yet but let’s get started anyways, LOL.

THIS IS BIG & FPL needs to be held accountable! 👇

“Top executives at utility giant Florida Power & Light worked closely with the political consultants who orchestrated a scheme to promote spoiler candidates in three key state Senate elections last year.”
orlandosentinel.com/politics/os-ne… AIF played a role too, and a Democratic consultant! 👇

In the text, Newman sent Pitts and MacIver a picture of a $1.25 million check from FPL to his consulting company, ENH Industries, along with the message, “The eagle has landed.”

The FL Legislature voted to raise taxes on consumers – so they could cut taxes on businesses – by more than $1 billion/year.

Now my colleagues may pass $300M more in tax breaks – but just for the state's very biggest corporations. Companies like Disney, HCA & Anheuser-Busch. 1/ This is an ENORMOUS corporate giveaway.

Big-business lobbyists want you to think it’s too complicated for you to understand -- but it’s not!
