In New York, facial recognition technology has been used to target people of color in protests, threatening their right to freedom of expression and peaceful protest.

So we sued the NYPD, and won 🧵
Last year, when we asked the NYPD to publish their data on facial recognition, they refused. So we mapped their surveillance cameras.
More than 7,000 digital volunteers joined our global #BanTheScan campaign and searched every intersection in NYC for the CCTV cameras powering the NYPD’s facial recognition system. They identified 25,500 public and private cameras.

Analysis of the data shows that New Yorkers living in areas at greater risk of racist stop-and-frisk policing are likely to be more exposed to invasive facial recognition technology.
In the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens, the research also showed that the higher the proportion of non-white residents, the higher the concentration of facial recognition compatible CCTV cameras.
When New Yorkers marched for racial justice during the Black Lives Matter protests of mid-2020, they risked high levels of exposure to facial recognition.
Facial recognition for identification is mass surveillance and is incompatible with the rights to privacy, equality, and freedom of assembly. This week, the New York Supreme Court has ordered the NYPD to hand over documents detailing their surveillance.

New Yorkers demanding racial justice have a right to know the full details of NYPD’s use of facial recognition technology during the BLM protests.

Disinformation and a lack of access to the Drama Theatre in Mariupol, Ukraine has led to a battle for the facts. We spoke to 53 witnesses as well as experts in physics, weapons, and satellite imagery.

Here's what we found 🧵
At the time of the attack, hundreds of civilians were sheltering inside.

The theatre was a haven for people fleeing violence in other parts of the city. Volunteers organised medical care, distributed water, and cooked in a field kitchen.
Amnesty found no evidence of significant military presence in or around the theatre.

Witnesses told Amnesty that at most one or two Ukrainian soldiers briefly visited the theatre – they delivered food, dropped off civilians or shared info about possible evacuations.

⚡ We at Amnesty have just published heartbreaking new testimony from relatives of 48 ethnic Uyghur and Kazakh people detained in China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.
amn.st/6011zWQ0Z
This new testimony is part of our Free Xinjiang Detainees campaign, which now tells the stories of 120 individuals who have been swept up in China’s vast system of prisons and internment camps in Xinjiang.
The outgoing High Commissioner, @mbachelet, has yet to release a long-awaited report on serious human rights violations in Xinjiang, and has repeatedly failed to recognize the gravity of violations by Chinese authorities in the region.

⚡️ 1.7 million internally displaced people live in camps in absolute destitution in north-west Syria. They are entirely dependent on aid for survival. The non-renewal of the cross-border mechanism by the UN Security Council risks shutting down their last lifeline.

THREAD 👇
More than half of the internally displaced population in north-west Syria lives in 1,414 camps, usually in one-room tents that do not have solid doors or locks and do not offer insulation from the extreme cold or heat. Many have no access to potable water or functioning latrines.
Limited access to essential services and inadequate living conditions in camps in north-west Syria, put internally displaced people at exacerbated risks of contagious diseases and gender-based violence.

Our Secretary General @AgnesCallamard who is in Ukraine right now: Russia’s aggression challenges us all: what kind of a world do we want to live in – one that is built on bullying, authoritarianism, the brutality of weapons deployed above and beyond the weight of the law?
It has unleashed an international crisis that deserves global solidarity for the people directly affected but which demands solutions that require global thinking and universal commitment.
We have suggested during our mission that Ukraine’s officials engage further with countries & governments outside Western bloc – the African Union, the governments and parliaments of African countries, Asian, Latin American - to enlarge the coalition of support.

Last night a draft opinion of the USA Supreme Court was leaked and would pave the way for abortion rights to be overturned in the US. This major attack on fundamental rights can have global implications for women, girls, and people who can get pregnant. A group of activists holdin...
The year is 2022 and we are STILL fighting against decisions that retrogress governments’ obligation to protect the rights of girls, women, and people who can get pregnant. Our right to decide is under attack. #RoeVWade #legalabortion #BansOffOurBodies An activist stands in front...
It could not be clearer: the right to access safe abortion is a human right. If the Supreme Court in the US decides to ban abortion, it is Black, Indigenous, and lower-income people who will suffer the most. Activists stand in front of...

Today marks International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, observing the 1960 killing of dozens in South Africa who protested against apartheid laws.

However, apartheid isn't a relic of the past, it's a reality for millions of Palestinians. #EndIsraeliApartheid
Palestinians facing the brutality of Israel’s cruel system of discrimination have been calling on the international community to recognize and take action against Israel’s apartheid.

Palestinians need us to take action against decades of injustice. amnesty.org/en/petition/de…
The dispossession and displacement of Palestinians from their homes is a crucial pillar of Israel’s apartheid system. Over 6 million Palestinians remain as refugees and at least 150,000 in Israel & the OPT are at risk of losing their homes.
