News broke yesterday that drastic changes to federal permitting requirements could be included in must-pass legislation Congress will take up in September. Our statement and a 🧵--> sierraclub.org/press-releases…
Let's be clear: ensuring our communities and our clean air and water are protected is not a trade chip. Should a bill come forward that includes changes that would weaken reviews of impacts to communities & the environment, we'll fight like hell against it.
Right now, Congress must focus on passing the Inflation Reduction Act as soon as possible. This bill includes key investments to tackle the climate crisis, invest in clean energy, create jobs, & safeguard communities. We can't wait any longer for this critical legislation.
We've fought tirelessly to defend bedrock environmental protections. We'll also keep fighting polluting projects like #NoMVP. From the courtroom to the halls of Congress, we will always fight to put communities, the environment, & our future above corporate polluters’ profits.

1/ The Community Reinvestment Act regulates bank financing for marginalized communities.
Here's why we’re calling on federal regulators to incorporate environmental racism and climate change when banks consider where to direct investments. 🧵⤵️ sierraclub.org/articles/2022/…
2/ As the climate crisis intensifies, we've seen how it affects marginalized communities first and worst.
These climate impacts exacerbate centuries of institutionalized discrimination like redlining, or refusing loans, which in turn contributes to subpar infrastructure.
3/ In short, these redlined neighborhoods have a heightened vulnerability to climate-related harms.
As our climate crisis worsens, we must ensure the government protects our most vulnerable communities.
Thankfully, we have laws like the Community Reinvestment Act.
ICYMI: We sued @USPS, again. The agency is failing to produce documents in response to a Freedom of Information Act request for records related to its Oshkosh contract for hundreds of thousands of fossil fuel trucks. sierraclub.org/press-releases…
"These trucks will impact the local air quality and climate-warming greenhouse gas emissions in almost every neighborhood across America." - @eksax, Managing Attorney with the Sierra Club
"The USPS has a duty to be fully transparent about the Oshkosh contract and make the public aware why they’ve chosen to double down on a new fleet that’s made of majority polluting fossil fuel trucks." - @eksax
Today, the Sierra Club launched a first-of-its-kind tool that allows folks to calculate their family’s energy burden. sierraclub.org/energy-burden-… Thread 🧵⤵️
Energy burden is the total percentage of a family’s income spent on energy bills. 6% of income is considered the maximum affordable-amount for energy bills, but the average energy burden for low-income households is 8.6%. sierraclub.org/press-releases…
High energy burdens can threaten a household’s ability to pay for energy, forcing tough choices between paying energy bills and buying food, medicine, or other essentials. sierraclub.org/articles/2021/…
1/ White House announces $1 billion America the Beautiful Challenge to support nationwide conservation efforts. sierraclub.org/press-releases…
2/ "The science is clear – we must protect 30% of all lands and waters in this country if we are going to take on the intersecting challenges of the climate crisis, biodiversity crisis, and nature equity gap."
-Kirin Kennedy, Sierra Club’s Director for People and Lands Policy
3/ "Key to achieving that is the diverse, locally driven conservation projects the America the Beautiful Challenge will support."
It puts us on the path to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 50% of 2005 levels by 2030. This is essential for protecting us all from climate disasters, especially the BIPOC & frontline communities that are most harmed.
This week, @SecDebHaaland and @SecretaryPete agreed to strengthen coordination between @Interior and @USDOT to increase access to national parks and improve options to get there in a pollution-free ride.
"This is an important step in making public lands and waters more accessible for all. Inadequate public transit to public lands limits puts the positive benefits of spending time in nature out of reach for too many."
- @JackieOstfeld
"We welcome this announcement and call on Congress to take additional steps to ensure that all people are able to exercise their right to experience nature."
