Why did we build a map of NHS privatisation + outsourcing? 🗺️💙💰
🧵 A thread:
Lots of people are (rightly) worried about #NHSPrivatisation, but they see it as something to avoid or prevent happening in the future.
The truth is - it's already here.
Privatisation has been...
...creeping into the NHS for 30 years.
This transfer of assets into private hands has landed the NHS in major debt, created a postcode lottery for patients & as published in the Lancet; led to an increase in ‘treatable mortality’(preventable deaths)... thelancet.com/journals/lanpu…
...by introducing a profit motive, priorities are inevitably skewed. The sole focus of healthcare workers should be patient care, not profit margins.
Short term contracts also disrupt long-term caring relationships which are incredibly valuable, esp. for clinically complex...
...patients.
🚪 And it's happened behind closed doors
All independent providers use the NHS logo; so many patients don't even realise that the care they're receiving - while paid for by the NHS - isn't being delivered by it. england.nhs.uk/nhsidentity/id…
And all this happened...
...without politicians being honest with us. Many deny #NHSPrivatisation by saying services are still "free at point of use".
But privatisation means much more than that. As a public health service we strongly believe it should be funded, run & delivered by the public sector...
...that's why we built this map; to show everyone what’s really happening.
Thanks to @humap_me_, a lot of research (there’s no comprehensive list like this out there), and thousands of wonderful people in our community emailing info & donating we launched stage 2 this week...
...our map now covers the whole of the UK.
Click & explore what’s happening where you live or take a look at differences around the country.
And if there's anything we've missed or got wrong you can also email us; campaigns@everydoctor.org.uk because it’s a living document...
...stage 3 (🤞in 4-6 weeks) will add PFI data for NHS Trusts revealing the debt & yearly interest payments many hospitals are stuck with 💷 Money that could be spent on patients.
Much private borrowing stretches back 20 years.
More proof privatisation isn't anything new...
That's why our fight has always been to halt + *reverse* NHS privatisation.
But we can't have this 2nd part of the conversation until everyone (& we mean everyone - politicians from every party, healthcare leaders, press, NHS staff, think tanks & the public) is honest about...
Please take a look 🔎 Share it with everyone you know. And, if you can, join our fight with a small monthly donation today. Our members power everything we do 💙 everydoctor.org.uk/join-everydoct…

"I’m a consultant obstetrician of 10 years. I’ve seen it all. It takes a lot to make me cry.
I cried on the way to work in the car this morning listening to Jeremy Hunt on radio 4 regarding the Shrewsbury and Telford report...
...I cried for all the babies and families, lives needlessly lost and ruined.
I cried for all the staff in those units broken by the system which has let down so many.
I cried with frustration at Mr Hunt's statement that hospitals “need to be hungry” to find out why...
...babies die and bring about change, and that staff need to be free to talk openly about mistakes without fear of scapegoating, losing their job and ending up in court.
I cried for my colleague who is so broken by her recent Coroner’s court experience after a baby's death...
Only 36% of people are satisfied with our NHS - the lowest level in 25 years.
And understandably so.
Millions are waiting for treatment. We're terminally short of staff. But for the real reason, we need to dig deeper. To explain why the... theguardian.com/society/2022/m…
...failings in our NHS are not the fault of staff; who are fighting to do their best in a broken system, but those who are meant to hold ultimate responsibility: our government.
While thankfully the govt updated the policy, and free COVID-19 tests will continue to be available for specific patients and NHS and care staff, the risk remains too high. gov.uk/government/new…
🚛 Today our ad van toured Westminster to highlight the links that exist between some politicians and companies who are profiting from public healthcare.
Next up: Ranil Jayawardena.
The MP for North East Hampshire...
...Ranil Jayawardena's constituency office space was paid for by Serco, a total value of £18,999.96.
Serco, which had revenues of ~£4.4 billion last year, was 1 of the biggest companies behind (the inaccurately named) NHS Test and Trace system. The same system which wasted...
...£37 billion - about 20% of the NHS’ entire annual budget.
If we want a truly public NHS, we have to fight for it.
Another MP and member of Boris Johnson's team with links to private healthcare providers is Priti Patel.
Documents uncovered by Good Law Project in the course of another legal case over the government’s controversial PPE contracts found…
...a personal link between our Home Secretary+a consultant working for the firm Pharmaceuticals Direct Ltd.
The same firm who were awarded a PPE contract worth £28.8 million in May 2020 💰
And another one worth £102.6 million in July 💰💰
Both awarded without competition...
...while Priti Patel has declared “Nil” in Parliament's Register of Interests.

🚛 Today our ad van is touring London to raise awareness of the multitude of links that exist between private healthcare companies and (far too many!) of our MPs 🚨
Next up is Stephen Hammond...
...the Conservative MP for Wimbledon (who also served as a Minister in the Department of Health+Social Care from Nov 2018-July 2019) Stephen Hammond became a Non-Executive Director of OptiBiotix Health Plc; a biotechnological research company, last year.
Upon his appointment...
...the company commented: “Hammond’s appointment reflects the continued evolution and ambition of the board as the company moves into the next phase of its development to become a profitable international business with global brands”...
