THREAD: What you need to know about #Gaza

Gaza is a tiny strip of land in Palestine, home to more than 2 million Palestinians.
Most are refugees from Palestinian cities and towns in what became Israel. Palestinians (and their descendants) who were driven from their homes when Israel forced ¾ of the Palestinian population off their land in 1948.
Since 1967 Palestinians in Gaza have lived under brutal Israeli military rule. This means the Israeli government controls most aspects of their lives while denying them the right to vote and all other rights people take for granted.
For the past 15 years, Israel has sealed Gaza off from the rest of the world, trapping all 2+ million Palestinians inside. This brutal military blockade is enforced by Israel and Egypt via land, air, and sea. No one can escape or flee to safety.
Israeli restrictions on food, water, and medicine make life in Gaza unbearable. 97% of water in Gaza is undrinkable, and 75% of Palestinian residents are food insecure.

Israel calls these cruel and deliberate measures “[putting] the Palestinians on a diet.”
Israel has one of the most powerful militaries in the world and is attacking a largely defenseless and trapped civilian population. Half of Palestinians in Gaza are children, 91% of whom suffer from PTSD due to Israel’s endless brutalization.
Since 2008, Israel has killed more than 4,000 Palestinians in Gaza over the course of 4 horrific military assaults, including hundreds of children:

2008: Israel murdered 412 Palestinian children.
2012: Israel murdered 42 Palestinian children.
(Continued)
2014: Israel murdered 578 Palestinian children.
2021: Israel murdered 66 Palestinian children.
In the past day, the Israeli military has killed at least 40 Palestinians in Gaza, including children, and injured more than 300 others.
In days, all remaining hospitals will be forced to shut down as Israel cuts off Gaza’s electricity. There are no bomb shelters in Gaza. There is nowhere to run.
Year after year, the Israeli military unleashes horrific all-out attacks on defenseless Palestinians in Gaza. And year after year, the US government gives Israel nearly $4 billion to fund this senseless violence.

These are war crimes. Palestinians deserve freedom.

THREAD: Here’s what journalists need to know when covering Israel’s latest attack on #Gaza:
1) Palestinians in Gaza live under a brutal, illegal, 15-year-long siege, where Israel has limited Palestinians’ access to electricity, clean drinking water, and life-saving medical treatment.
2) Israel has one of the most powerful militaries in the world and is attacking a largely defenseless, entrapped civilian population in one of the most densely populated places in the world.

THREAD: Ben & Jerry’s has been in a legal battle with its parent company, Unilever, to keep its ice cream sales off land Israel stole from Palestinians.

This Monday, Ben & Jerry’s is taking Unilever to court to uphold the company’s social justice values.
In 2021, Ben & Jerry’s decided to stop selling ice cream in illegal Israeli settlements, on Palestinian land Israel stole. The company said that selling Ben & Jerry’s ice cream there was “inconsistent” with its values.
In response, its parent company, Unilever, undermined both its contract with Ben & Jerry’s, and Ben & Jerry’s principled decision to stand for Palestinian freedom, by planning to continue the sale of the brand’s ice cream on stolen Palestinian land.

THREAD: After finally meeting with the Abu Akleh family today, @SecBlinken has yet to commit to holding a US investigation into the Israeli murder of their family member, Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.
The family has been pushing for the US to hold Israel accountable for killing Shireen for over two months. The Abu Akleh family has been clear that a transparent and thorough US investigation is the very first step towards accountability and justice for Shireen.
Though they met with @SecBlinken today, the Abu Akleh family is still waiting for meaningful action from the US and continuing to demand a meeting with @POTUS to ensure that achieving justice for Shireen is a priority.

BREAKING: The Abu Akleh family has arrived in DC to demand that the US government hold Israel accountable for killing their family member, legendary Palestinian American reporter Shireen Abu Akleh. Read the family’s full statement on the visit in Politico:
This afternoon, the family will meet with @SecBlinken and reiterate their demands for a thorough and transparent investigation into Shireen’s murder that leads to real accountability.
To date, the Biden administration has helped Israel avoid accountability, rather than seek justice for an American citizen murdered by an Israeli soldier.

THREAD: What You Need to Know About Israel’s New “Facebook Bill” 🧵
A new Israeli bill dubbed the “Facebook Bill” will be used to target and silence Palestinians, particularly journalists and activists who shed light on Israel's violence against Palestinians—something the Israeli government would rather keep in the dark.
The bill allows the Israeli government to remove posts across social media platforms, and all websites–including posts and articles from news platforms.

This is an unprecedented infringement on freedom of expression.

Earlier today, @POTUS signed an agreement with Israel that yet again throws Palestinians under the bus, enabling more Israeli war crimes against Palestinian families.

In response, Palestinians and allies are speaking out. Here’s what they’ve had to say:
“While people and governments around the world are increasingly recognizing that Israel is an apartheid state brutally oppressing Palestinians, President Biden remains firmly in denial of reality." - @DrHananAshrawi, prominent Palestinian scholar and human rights advocate
"The Jerusalem Declaration is sorely out of step with the progressive base that ushered Biden into office as well as the global social movements resisting fascism and climate doom." - Palestinian American human rights attorney @4noura
