For the 7th day, the #PLA's Eastern Theater Command said they are continuing the military exercise around #Taiwan, with its airforce dispatching different types of fighter jets to participate in a coordinated exercise between #China's airforce and navy.weibo.com/7483054836/M0m…
It's important to note that #China originally said its military exercise would end on August 7, but with the exercise being extended three more days, it feels like they are hoping to form an impression in the region that exercises of such proximity could become a new normal.
According to @Reuters, About 20 Chinese navy and Taiwan navy ships continued to stay close to the median line of the Taiwan Strait as of Wednesday (Aug 10) morning. todayonline.com/world/chinese-…
Several Chinese navy ships continued to conduct missions off Taiwan's eastern coast as of Wednesday morning, the source said.

"The number of U.S. student visas issued to Chinese nationals plunged by more than 50% in the first half of 2022 compared with pre-Covid levels, with the U.S. losing ground as the most-coveted place for Chinese students to pursue higher education abroad." wsj.com/articles/chine…
"Even before the pandemic, Chinese students were shifting their study-abroad sights elsewhere, driven by doubts about whether they would feel welcome in the U.S. and the emergence of more domestic and international alternatives."
"In the first six months of 2022, the U.S. issued 31,055 F-1 visas to Chinese nationals, down from 64,261 for the same period in 2019, according to data from the U.S. State Department."

Beijing's pledge to conduct "regular patrols" near #Taiwan following its large-scale military drills points to a worrisome development. I talked to @BonnieGlaser, @C_P_Twomey, @BrianTHart about #China’s attempt to change the status quo of the Taiwan Strait.m.dw.com/en/how-is-chin…
"I believe the Chinese are trying to change the status quo and create a new normal in the Taiwan Strait,” said Bonnie Glaser.
"China decided they wanted to do something unprecedented and they wanted to demonstrate the development in their military capabilities and show their resolve," she added.

"Mr. Liang, 70 years old, led Samsung’s chip development at the time of its breakthrough and now is in charge of SMIC’s operations in Shanghai. Earlier in his career, he also was one of the stars behind the rise of TSMC." wsj.com/articles/a-70-…
"SMIC grabbed him five years ago, and it has managed to keep him on board as it leads China’s drive to enter the top echelon of semiconductors."
"SMIC made news recently when an industry analytics firm, TechInsights Inc., said the Chinese company had made a 7-nanometer chip for a bitcoin miner. The figure, a fraction of the width of a human hair, refers to the space between transistors on a chip.

"What really triggers people in #Taiwan are cliché phrases like renegade province. These phrases really make people here feel like the international media is just not interested in really incorporating Taiwanese people’s perspective," I told @goldkorn. supchina.com/2022/08/09/why…
"But I think we’re seeing that changing with more correspondents being based here. I think China has really created a condition for the international media to have more access to, or chances to interact and really get to understand Taiwan."
"Because in the past, oftentimes, the frustration is people living here would think that the media is mostly approaching a Taiwan story from Beijing’s perspective."

"The Biden administration is vowing to continue sailing warships through the #Taiwan Strait and to conduct air operations in the region in response to Chinese military drills." nytimes.com/2022/08/10/us/…
"But in interviews and public statements, American and Taiwanese officials made clear they now believe China used Ms. Pelosi’s visit as a pretext to step up its operations to intimidate Taiwan for months or years to come, ...
... and perhaps speed the timetable of its plans to establish control over the island’s 23 million people, much as it did in Hong Kong."

"The new Labor government is attempting a diplomatic reset with Beijing – a necessary if very likely futile gesture – even though Australia has already chosen a side and China knows it."
"Australia is attempting to reopen dialogue with the regime in Beijing while being fully intent on constraining China’s escalating desire to control the region, a strategy that overlaps with Washington, but is also an articulation of our own values-based foreign policy."
