More recent historical context for current events.

According to @Newsweek, the "road to the raid" on a former President's home began with NARA and National Archivist David Ferriero.

I have some experience dealing with him.🧵

1. newsweek.com/exclusive-info… Image
2. He sidelined NARA's independent watchdog on paid admin leave for 2 years, a needless waste of taxpayer money that also ensured less oversight of his agency at the time.

govexec.com/management/201…
3. Here is Mr. Ferriero's letter to @ChuckGrassley from September 2015 responding to Qs about what he did (or didn't do) about Hillary Clinton's secret, offsite email server.

4. Mr. Ferriero did *not* take a muscular approach to retrieving those federal records, "deferring to the State Department review" instead.

"We do not believe that it is appropriate or necessary at this time for NARA to request that the Attorney General initiate an action." Image
5. And under Mr. Ferriero, NARA had never conducted an inspection of the State Department's records system because it did not "warrant an inspection." Image
6. Clinton's lawyer had a thumb drive containing classified material from her server.

But, hey, no big deal. No warrant. No raid. No team of FBI agents.

After all, his "law firm is taking 'appropriate measures' to secure the files."

7. The Archivist of the U.S. serves indefinitely (no fixed term). It has not been considered a partisan position before. But, based on Mr. Ferriero’s statements upon resigning earlier this year, it seems he saw his role in partisan political terms. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Fer… Image

Who is the other official #whistleblowers identified, along with Thibault, as being "deeply involved" in launching DOJ's "false-electors scheme" criminal probe?

Richard Pilger, Director of the Election Crimes Branch, who has a history with Lois Lerner & IRS targeting.

THREAD 1:
2. Here are key pages from the 2014 Congressional report, at republicans-oversight.house.gov/wp-content/upl…

Pilger contacted Lerner in 2013 asking to coordinate with the IRS on an idea from @SenWhitehouse for DOJ to "piece together false statement" cases against certain nonprofits. ImageImage
3. You remember Lois Lerner.

She's the IRS official held in contempt of Congress.

And yet, @TheJusticeDept refused to even present the contempt citation to a Grand Jury, as required by statute.

Some key context missing from this WaPo article by @PostRoz, @DevlinBarrett, @CarolLeonnig, @jdawsey1 & @hsu_spencer.

THREAD: 1. On May 31, @ChuckGrassley wrote to @FBI about WFO Assistant SAC Timothy Thibault's political bias.
2. Shades of Peter Strzok.

Here are some examples and background, as described in the letter.

See highlights where Thibault even attacks @RepLizCheney ("Your dad was a disgrace"):

3. Then, on Monday, Grassley revealed that several #whistlelowers had come forward to detail how systemic political bias infects the @FBI and @TheJusticeDept through gatekeepers like Thibault and others who decide what gets investigated and what doesn't.

From our lawsuit seeking documents about what, if anything, @TheJusticeDept has done to address the appearances of a conflict created by the hiring of a prominent Durham critic from Brookings to a senior National Security Division position:
Brookings, of course, has received a subpoena in connection with the Durham probe:

Nicholas Wade via @WSJopinion...

"This remarkable email establishes that the Andersen team’s initial reaction was to suspect that SARS-CoV-2 had been engineered in a lab. Their subsequent letter doesn’t adequately explain how they overcame this impression."
"After taking one look at the horrific possibility that a lab leak origin for SARS-CoV-2 might cause virology labs all over the world to be closed down, it would seem, the Andersen team decided to disregard their first impressions of possible manipulation."
"The Jan. 31, 2020, email from Mr. Andersen shows that Dr. Fauci knew from the beginning that experts had serious suspicions about the virus’s origins."

Democrats Divided on Trump-era Scandals

Americans should unite to demand better oversight that focuses on important issues with broad support rather than partisan gotcha games.

bit.ly/2SZMEJq
Congress rarely gets a sympathetic ear from the judicial branch when asking to use the court’s authority rather than its own Constitutional tools to get information.
That’s especially true if the subpoenas in question were issued on a partisan basis and the partisans involved admit to CNN that their oversight is actually a political fishing expedition for presidential election purposes.

1 month & 10 days ago, IG integrity cmte wrote to @JoeBiden to recommend discipline, up to and including removal, for the FHFA IG. bit.ly/3oNyOph

The only person I've seen defending the IG is her high-priced lawyer, Trump's former interim WH Counsel.
The facts have been investigated extensively. bit.ly/substack-jsnfo…

The only question for the WH and Congress is: “Are you okay with this behavior from from an inspector general?”

Thus far, inaction from the WH and silence from most in Congress suggests the answer is “yes.”
Just a few articles reporting on @ChuckGrassley and @SenRonJohnson calling for action. That's it.

Crickets from virtually everyone else.

That's a shame and a disservice to the whistleblowers.
