Superintendent Marty Pollio is recapping the first day of school.

He says first day transportation woes are normal. Some kindergartners are navigating the bus system for the first time, and that can cause delays.

Also, yesterday’s thunderstorm knocked out power at two compounds
The last student got home about six minutes earlier than on last year’s first day, Pollio says.
We have a SPECIAL GUEST
A #LouMedia HERO
Pollio reminds folks that the CDC community levels update tonight. No one wants to see it drop to yellow and make masks optional more than him, he says.
Pollio is confident the requirement is on solid legal ground since it follows CDC guidance, minimal worries about a potential federal lawsuit over it.
Important note: JCPS board meets next Tuesday. A board member could add a vote on the mask policy to the agenda.
It is not currently on the agenda for next Tuesday, but a board member could make a motion about masks during the meeting.

I, like many of you, was curious just how a religion could be opposed to masks and/or caring about one's neighbor.

So, I did a lil searching. Here's a 🧵 of what I found.
Let's just dive right on in.

A form letter for someone to claim a religious exemption from a mask mandate gives a few reasons (plus associated Bible verses to drive the point home).

static1.squarespace.com/static/5eecbc7…
Among the reasons:

- "A mask requirement obscures God’s image and contravenes His design for mankind."

- An anti-mask rant under the rationale that wearing a mask constitutes lying, and God doesn't like liars.

- Masking promotes "an ungodly message of fear."

And the new CDC community levels still have Jefferson County in the red, so masks will continue to be required in JCPS next week.
And a JCPS board member will make a motion to relax the mask rules during next Tuesday's meeting.

Hello from the first day of school!

My first stop today: THE Waggener HS. Image
A surprise theme from today’s Waggener visit: this football team is supposed to be pretty good.

One coach said it was the best team since 2010. No discipline issues either this season, he added.
Next stop: Bowen Elementary.

That is, if I make it through the car rider line I accidentally found myself in. Image

JCPS families and students: Check to see if your bus route is one of nearly 60 routes expected to be delayed due to a shortage of drivers.

Some routes could see delays as long as 95 minutes.
docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d…
Based on my calculations and drive time estimates, 33 routes will be so delayed that students will be late to school.

Many of those are elementary schools, since they start later and delays at the MS/HS level delay ES, too.
Students on those routes, based on the median, wouldn't be too late - about 8-9 minutes, based on my math.

But some schools are looking at students being late 30 minutes to an hour.*

*again based on my calculations on the current bus route times*

A floor amendment on Senate Bill 1, the school council bill that has been stalled in the House, would add what appears to be the full language of HB 487, an anti-CRT bill. #KYGA22

👀👀
SB 1 has two readings and could move out to the House Ed cmte and through the House all on Tuesday.

HB 487 never got a committee assignment and is basically dead at this point.
But the fact this comes in a floor amendment rather than a committee sub is interesting. If the bill sponsor wanted those changes, I would think they’d be in the sub.

(Of course, there may be a sub that I haven’t seen because no one ever posts them online before a vote.)
