On the eve of 75th Independence Day, we wish to bring you the supreme sacrifices of our greatest freedom fighters from the land of Veeramangai Velu Nachiyar, the Sivagangai District in Tamil Nadu.

This is the land that saw the bravery and courage of Raja of Sivagangai, Muthu Vaduganadhar, who fought till his last breath along with his army and also sacrificed his life to the British troops that invaded and plundered Kalayar Kovil in 1772. (2/6)
After this incident wife of Raja Muthu Vaduganathar went into exile along with her daughter Vellachi Nachiyar, Commander Kuyili and Generals Marudhu Brothers to come back 8 years later as Veeramangai Rani Velu Nachiyar to rule Sivagangai in the late 1700s. (3/6)
In 1801, Marudhu Brothers attacked with their mighty army & succeeded in capturing 3 districts from Britishers.
The same year they made the very first documented declaration of war against Britishers through the ‘Jambutheevu Declaration’ and pasted it in Srirangam Temple. (4/6)

After a fierce war at Cholapuram in October 1801, they were hanged to death in Thirupathur. Their heads were placed before the Kalaiyar Temple, to which the brothers were ardent devotees.
