There's no defined “end” of a pandemic. How it will play out in the coming months and years is uncertain, particularly as the virus continues to evolve.
Continued surveillance, public health vigilance, and access to/use of masks, tests, treatments & vaccines will be critical. /2
Although it may feel like Covid is now like annual flu, data show it is still causing (MANY) more hospitalizations & deaths than the flu does; keeping up with vaccines & boosters is so important. /3
To reduce risk of infection, mask when you are going to crowded indoor spaces, particularly when case counts are high. Don’t forgo important life events or seeing friends & family, ...but do so carefully.
We know how to reduce risk with vaccines, masks & tests. #WeCanDoThis /4
Getting tested still plays a critical role in reducing virus spread & getting earlier treatment. Home tests continue to be reliable for detecting when you have a contagious infection.
@US_FDA has emphasized the importance of repeated testing for an even better snapshot. /5
Vaccines are very likely to reduce the risk of developing long Covid, & boosters help this even more. It's very important to be fully up to date w/ your vaccine & boosters.
Omicron boosters might add even more help to reduce infection & risk of long Covid. I'm eager to see. /6
Progress has been made, showing what is possible w/ funding, political will & science.
Much more work is needed to support our public health system; bring it up to date & fully capable of withstanding future health emergencies.
Another crisis will come, let's be ready. /End

🧵It’s critical to do all we can to manage the #Omicron surge. At the same time, we must re-position our national strategy to be more proactive & plan for a normal life that is able to manage #COVID like other respiratory viruses. 1/ @JAMA_currentjamanetwork.com/journals/jama/…
The quality of your mask can be the difference between life & death.
It would be very helpful to have clear federal guidance on high quality N95/KN95/KF94 masks & a certification process to clearly identify those that meet a standard for filtration. 1/
I strongly encourage the USG to mail free N95 masks to every home (same masks required to be worn around @POTUS, same masks being worn by the @WHCOVIDResponse officials). 2/
A broad public messaging campaign, combined w/ mailing out high quality N95 masks, would enable Americans to see, touch & use better respiratory protection. They would know what to buy & how to wear it correctly. 3/
😢💔I’m heartbroken beyond words that this pandemic has now taken my mom, Jacqueline Crossman. I’ve fought to protect her & God called her home to chaperone the children heading to heaven. My beautiful mother is my rock & gave me love & support through so much. 1/
She taught thousands of children through the Kids After School program she helped start decades ago & she taught arts & crafts & baking for nearly 30 years at the @BGCA_Clubs Boys & Girls Club of Hutchinson, KS. We will create a memorial scholarship in her name there. 2/
We will celebrate her love & life on Tuesday 8/24 at 10 am at the Old Mission Heritage Funeral Home 528 North Main in Hutchinson, KS 67501. Memorials can be sent there in her name. 3/
