India in the Ancient World

The Compilation of #AzadiKaAmritMahotsav Series
In the last 3 weeks, we published a series of threads to celebrate the #AzadiKaAmritMahotsav, the 75 years of our independence.

Today on 15th August, as it comes to its conclusion, we are publishing the compilation of the whole series.
1.

The incredible story of the ancient port of Lothal, which traded with the world 4500 years ago.

2.

The few but absolutely fascinating descriptions of the sea trade and shipping which we find in the Rigveda

3.

The amazing story of the spread of Indian Medicine across the World from the 5th Century BCE to the 12th Century C.E.

The extent of this spread is astounding - From Ancient Greece to China and Japan, from Cambodia to Mongolia and Russia.

4.

Some of our past threads were brought together to create a small glimpse of India that existed 2000 years ago. It covered topics like urban planning, agriculture, philosophy, material culture, festivals, and Rajniti.

5.

Arikamedu (Pudducherry) was a booming port city and a global melting pot of global cultures for astonishing 1000 years.

6.

Buddhism, at one point, spread all across Asia.

But a small province of Buryatia (Siberia, Russia) shows some Indian imprints that predate the entry of Buddhism, and remarkable ties with the Indian culture after its interaction with Buddhism.

In this series, the goal of our 6 threads was to show the place of India in the Ancient world.
We see that for centuries, through trade and through philosophies, Hinduism & Buddhism, architecture, epics & other literature, Yoga, Ayurveda, and sciences, India reached all across Eurasia & parts of Africa,

For the ancient world, India remained a land of wonders and allure.
Today, at #AzadiKaAmritMahotsav, as our nation looks inwards and outwards to rise on its feet once again, we thought it was an apt topic to cover.
We wish you all a very happy Independence Day, and we thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for your overwhelming response to our series.

(A part of the #AzadiKaAmritMahotsav Series)
Approximately 4000 kilometers to the northeast of India lies Lake Baikal. Lake Baikal is the world's largest freshwater lake by volume, containing 22–23% of the world's fresh surface water. And around Baikal in the Republic of Buryatia lives the Buryat community.
This community has centuries-old ties to Indian ethos through Tibetan Buddhism, Hinduism, and other linkages.

Dashrajna War (Battle of the Ten Kings) - The First Epochal War of India

The great war of Mahabharata and the epic of Mahabharata is deeply embedded in our collective memory.

But long before the Mahabharata war, perhaps there was another great war, which is told in the Rigveda - the Dashrajna War aka the Battle of the Ten Kings.
While its archaeological evidence is not yet available, we find its memories in the Rgveda.

They tell us the story of a great war that once took place amongst the kingdoms of the ancient Indian civilization.

We have seen India's buoyant relations with other ancient civilizations in previous threads.

Its trade with the western world initially took place via the waste coast. In the second half of the first millennium BCE, the southeastern coast also gained prominence.

The Amazing Story of Indian Medicine's Spread across the World from the 5th Century BCE to the 12th Century C.E.

(A Long thread)
As we saw in previous threads, Indian civilization had developed interactions with other ancient societies already a few thousand years ago.

And as the societies evolved, these interactions expanded to include exchanges of ideas on science, astronomy, mathematics, and medicine.
Most of these civilizations had their approach to and methods of medicine.

Even then. Indian medicine proved to be a significant export of ancient India.
