Heads up #Baltimore. The conservative Sinclair Broadcast Group is financing a charter amendment on the ballot this year that would allow for recall of city elected officials. Recalls are increasing a tool used by the right to frustrate the will of progressive electorates.
This is why we have to vote in EVERY election. What’s the point in voting in high salience elections for Mayor & State’s Atty, & then not show up to vote when a ballot question could give powerful media forces the ability to generate the climate to recall yr candidates of choice?
We need turnout in November. If you’re curious about Sinclair Broadcasting - called by some “the most dangerous U.S. company you’ve never heard of,” watch this.
The recent recall of San Francisco D.A. Chesa Boudin helps illuminate how recalls are often funded. sfexaminer.com/archives/the-r…

THREAD. We are at emergency levels. Gov DeSantis is crashing through practices, standards & regimes designed to maintain the provision of secular, public education by professionally licensed educators. This is a direct assault on a fundamental building block of healthy democracy.
DeSantis: “Every morning our students recite the Pledge of Allegiance while looking at the the Star-Bangled Banner.” No. In 1943 SCOTUS decided that it would violate the 1st Amendment to compel students to recite the pledge. So this is NOT the reality for ALL students.
The Gov should know this. Moreover, reciting the Pledge can present moral confusion for students when the pledge conflicts w/the truth of what they see around them. Here’s white student in Little Rock describing seeing a Black rpter chased while she recited the Pledge in 1957.

We won’t let women decide whether or not to carry a pregnancy to term. We won’t extend Medicaid, address maternal mortality, provide affordable housing, free pre-school child care, guarantee parental leave or the child tax credit. But here’s a drop box for your baby. It’s grotesque.
Also, those who claim (relying on anecdote or personal exp) that women choosing abortion suffer lifelong emotional consequences, you think that a person who carries a baby to term & puts it anonymously in a dropbox will just keep it moving? Or a girl forced to give birth at 10?
Or a woman forced to carry a deceased fetus to birth? The depths of disregard and cruelty are truly hideous.

What if we gave to teachers a fraction of the attn & support we give to police? How about 100,000 new teachers,w/ supports to community colleges and state schools to prepare and fast track prepared teachers. What about increasing teacher salaries across the board?
Tax breaks for teachers teaching k-12 for more than 5 years. Cancellation of student debt after 5 years of teaching How about sensible gun safety laws that don’t require teachers to risk their lives to teach. You know who has “the right to go home every day?” Teachers.
What if we respected the work of teachers that we forbade laws that would penalize teachers for teaching history or contemporary subjects accurately at an appropriate level for their students? Indeed what if we rehauled our textbooks to accurately present American history?

When I watch the right embracing Orban today I think abt how often Black people insist that we must constantly honor the sacrifices of our forbears who fought & survived the Middle Passage, slavery, Jim Crow, the Civil Rts Mvmt. Sometimes young ppl say we rely on this too much.
But still old and young, we lift up our parents & grandparents, our heroes and sheroes. And how many white ppl devote themselves to ancestry research & Civil War reenactment. And it just confounds me, to see what is happening.
Over 400,000 Americans were killed in WWII-a war in which 88% of the soldiers were white. And yet we see so many Americans (mostly white) so readily defile the sacrifice of their grandparents & forbears who fought in WWII & defeated fascism, by embracing the rise of fascism here.

“Hire & train an additional 100,000 police officers.” I cannot fathom how after Uvalde the next step would be more police ofcrs. It’s not the number of ofcrs. The system itself is broken. And by now it’s well known that crime “prevention” begins w/community resources.
What is the evidence that the post-COVID rise in crime is due to a dearth of police ofcrs? Police budgets have increased, not decreased. This is a page from the 1994 President Clinton playbook (100,000 new cops) in 2022. With all that’s been exposed since then. So disappointing.
And the consequences of pursuing a plan that imagines saturating our communities with more cops who will enter what has been shown to be a broken system, riven with racism and brutality will be felt most harshly by Black ppl.

Actually it’s not Tony. The SCOTUS approval rating has remained consistently high as compared to elected officials even when they make unpopular decisions. The current concern is driven by concerns about both substance and process. How you make sea changes in American law matters.
Legitimacy is particularly important for courts b/c the public adhere’s to Court rulings only b/c they believe in the Court’s legitimacy - that it that the Court’s decisionmaking is cabined by a set of consistent rules that apply whatever the case or issue.
It is the recklessness & muscular approach of the current majority - the exercise of sheer numerical power over rules of stare decisis, for example - that has shaken confidence. Even Chief Justice Roberts -as conservative as any -has been unwilling to embrace the rush of the 5.
