The more & more research I do related to #ChristianNationalism (CN) & the Founding Fathers (FFs), the more I'm convinced that "was America founded as a Christian nation or not" is simply a wrongheaded way to approach the issue. It's simply not an either/or binary. It's "both."
Rather, we need to be asking something like: "Where do we see a simultaneous proclamation of religious freedom/pluralism/separation of church & state by the FFs *while* maintaining white Christian Supremacy for the purposes of American Imperialism?"
Its a clear case of cognitive dissonance that's analogous to the fact that the FFs simultaneously advocated human rights "that all men are created equal" AND had little to no problem with enslaving millions of Black people and committing genocide against Native Americans.
The FFs--& dozens of court cases after them (esp. related to Native American land rights & immigration law)--simultaneously advocated for religious freedom AND used the language of CN, of the US as the 'Promised Land,' of the Doctrine of Discovery, to justify American Imperialism
Take Thomas Jefferson, one of the most liberal FFs & best labeled a Deist - didn't believe Jesus was God, didn't believe Bible was divinely inspired, promoted Unitarianism, etc. He authored the VA religious freedom bill that was passed that was the basis for the 1st Amendment
Later in his life TJ said the VA RF bill was meant to prevent CN or giving primacy to any one religious sect, and rather, include/protect "the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and Mahometan [Muslim], the Hindoo, and Infidel of every denomination" - in short, everyone.
At the SAME TIME, TJ said in his 2nd inauguration: “Being in whose hands we are, who led our forefathers, as Israel from of old, from their native land, & planted them in a country flowing w/ all the necessaries & comforts of life; who has covered our infancy with his providence”
Is TJ catering to his audience? Maybe. But like CNs then (Puritans & Columbus) & now (eg, Mastriano blowing a shofar), TJ is saying white Euro Christians are the true Israelites who are entering a Promised Land. TJ is reading America back into the OT [& yes this is anti-Semitic]
100s of examples abound like this. Both proclamations of religious freedom and Christian supremacy are ubiquitous in our nation's history. One isn't true & the other false Indeed, *both* are essential myths to American Exceptionalism.
The question[s] then is what do we do about this complex history? Where do we go from here? What kind of people do we want to become?

I don't have the time & energy for a full-blown takedown of JMac's racism, but here's some historical context. JMac's allusions to the Curse of Ham & Tower of Babel for creation of 'race' by God were CENTRAL theories put forth by white supremacists who were biblical literalists
The idea of a curse of Ham & of an assoc. of blackness w/ slavery DID exist in the Middle Ages in Arabia & Europe. But scholars are in consensus that 'race' as we know it was an early modern invention created through Christian theology. For the proto-racial use see Goldenberg:
Also in the MA a dominant map of the world in Europe was the T-O map that associated 3 known continents--Africa, Europe & Asia--w/ Noah's 3 sons. This doesn't become racialized until after colonial era. Terrence Keel, "Religion, Polygenism & the Early Science of Human Origins":

Phew, that's tough to summarize, but here goes. Most of this is from Caputo & Rollins. They are similar, but God as Event is more atheistic form of theism than God as Ground. Tillich says God is not a Being/Subject, but ground of all being. God precedes any subject/object split.
God is an infinite structure that undergirds all our finitude. As soon as we reduce God to an object, we’ve created an idol. For the mystics, you connect w/ the Absolute through contemplation. For Tillich you encounter God through ultimate concern in concrete ethical acts.
He defined faith as “the state of being ultimately concerned.” ‘God’ is being moved by a cause greater than yourself (though a danger: one can be moved by diabolical cause). Hence “God” is revealed through your ethical love for your neighbor (Gen. 33:10; Mt 25; 1 Jn 4).

W/ the recent slanderous takes on #deconstruction, friendly reminder:
Derrida coined deconstruction
He was inspired by Heidegger’s Destruktion of the history of philosophy
Heidegger was shaped by Luther’s destructio
Deconstruction is at the heart of the Protestant Reformation.
Disclaimer #1: There are many iterations & variations of what ‘deconstruction’ has come to mean. It would be reductive to try to encapsulate all of them here. Indeed, the very meaning of the term suggests that texts & words have multiple meanings
Disclaimer #2: there are HUGE distinctive differences between Luther, Heidegger & Derrida. For one thing, Derrida, a Jew who experienced the effects of anti-Semitism and colonialism, would want nothing to do with Luther’s blatant anti-Judaism or Heidegger’s Nazism.

A little thread on #deconstruction. The past few wks, my phil of religion students have read essays on the religious exp of ppl in marginalized communities, challenging students to think abt how religion intersects w/ slavery, segregation, ableism, trauma, colonialism & sexism.
Their papers have been pretty 😳, both in how they admit they're largely ignorant of such perspectives & yet the stories resonate w/ them. They have lots to say abt how they feel religious institutions have failed them & give detailed reasons for why the find religion untenable.
There's a whole industry right now of conservatives [usually white guys w/ power] glibly explaining away #deconstruction , #exvangelical & #deconversion stories, often gaslighting victims & blaming them for their own questioning or loss of faith. They simply aren't listening.
