We want to highlight something that's happening in one school district tonight because it's emblematic of the disrespect for educators + students we've seen crop up statewide.
Thx to @TFN & @ACLUTx for sounding the alarm about Grapevine-Colleyville ISD's board meeting. 🧵
Tonight, the Grapevine-Colleyville ISD school board will vote on some radical policies that hamper educators' ability to #TeachTheTruth & target our LGBTQIA+ students.
In 2017, Texans rejected the so-called #TxLege "bathroom bill." That didn't stop lawmakers from spending four sessions last year bullying our trans students + apparently isn't stopping Grapevine-Colleyville ISD from attempting to implement their own discriminatory policy (CLA).
The proposed policy (CLA) would lead to teachers, staff, and students themselves policing one another's restroom access — an invasion of privacy and an open invitation for district-sanctioned bullying and harassment of trans & intersex students.
The board will vote on another discriminatory policy change with EMB, which would impose a gag order on elem. teachers from mentioning sexual orientation or gender identity — including their own.
It would also prohibit educators in ANY grade from addressing "gender fluidity."
Furthermore, the proposed policy would only recognize titles and pronouns based on a student's original birth certificate. This attempt to erase & belittle our trans & nonbinary students flies in the face of @tasbnews guidance.
Policy proposal EFA moves power over library collections & review from trained, professional librarians to the community and school board.
It also asks for regular review of materials related to "human sexuality" — a chilling effect on LGBTQIA+ content available to students.
One other important proposed policy: EMB, which would severely limit teaching and discussion of the history of racism and sexism — as well as race and gender issues — in Grapevine-Colleyville ISD.
It goes above and beyond even what was mandated by #SB3.
The investigation into IDEA has been ongoing since May 2021 based on evidence “that senior IDEA executives used IDEA financial and staff resources for their personal benefit.”
These findings resulted in the firing of IDEA’s CEO and COO. #TxEd
Dr. Cottrill is the Texas Education Agency’s Deputy Commissioner for Governance and Accountability — with a level of oversight not mentioned in his announcement as IDEA's superintendent.
That's a direct conflict of interest, and one more example of shady charter dealings. #TxEd
Since the #TxLege is interested in discussing COVID-19 safety in schools, let’s take a moment to set a few things straight. Science should be guiding our decisions, not social media misinformation. #TxEd
A thread 🧵
MYTH: COVID-19 is the same/not as bad as the flu.
FACT: COVID-19 is three times more infectious and more deadly than the seasonal flu. In fact, COVID has killed more than 10 times as many people as the worst flu season of the past decade.
MYTH: The Delta variant of COVID-19 is overblown.
FACT: CDC officials have said the Delta variant causes more severe illness & spreads like chickenpox. Well, as chickenpox did BEFORE we had a vaccine for it. A vaccination Texas now requires!
