On the day of death - 23 March 1931: 1. Mehta (lawyer of Bhagat Singh) on meeting with Rajguru was taken aback by his relaxed & carefree attitude, even in the face of imminent death.
2. Everybody felt that Rajguru was nervous at the sight of imminent death.
3. Shiv Verma (one of his colleagues) asked him whether he was scared of death to which Rajguru said that “I am, like you, proud of what I have accomplished. I have come to realize this truth only after challenging death. If we are able to show even a glimpse.....
...of the freedom to our fellow nationals by sacrificing our lives, they would be able to walk on that path by themselves. This death, then, would be blessing for us.”
4. He disclosed to Shiv Verma, “Before meeting you people, every moment of 19 years spent by me in dis world, brought new disappointment on account of poverty & want of love & life always appeared worse then hell. All this changed in company of you all within these last 3 years.”
5. On their way to be hanged, Bhagat Singh in the centre, Rajguru on his right and Sukhdev on his left, with the smile on their faces, started to sing.
'Dil se niklegi naa mar kar watan ki ulfat
Meri mitti se bhi khushboo-e -watan aaegi.'
and continued with the slogans of
Inquilab Zindabad
Vande Mataram.
The hangmen's hands were trembling but there was a broad smile on their faces.
Such was the valour of our freedom fighters.
