I’m in Sacramento today on behalf of @MomsDemand to thank members of the California General Assembly for their incredible work this legislative session - it’s one of the best years for progress on gun safety in the state’s history. #caleg
This year, California has taken action on ghost guns, marketing firearms to minors, cracking down on unlicensed manufacturers, holding the largely unchecked firearms industry accountable for dangerous practice. #caleg
They also passed several first-of-their-kind bills, including requiring all schools in California to send information home every year to parents about how to keep firearms securely stored, and one allowing citizens to enforce California’s assault weapons and ghost gun laws.
There is still one week left to go in the session. We’re cheering lawmakers on to get more gun safety bills passed, including funding a 988 crisis line, expanding victims’ compensation funding, and updating concealed carry permit laws in light of the SCOTUS decision. #caleg
And thank you @AGRobBonta for leading the way in America on the effective and innovative implementation of California’s lifesaving gun laws. #caleg

NEW: A Trump-appointed federal judge just struck down a Texas ban on 18 to 20- year-olds carrying handguns. In his opinion, the judge argues Audie Murphy was 19 when he fought in WWII in ... 1942.
The court stayed the injunction for 30 days pending appeal, so the prohibition is still in effect for now. A reminder that @GovAbbott just passed permitless carry, so there's no background check or training required to carry a hidden, loaded handgun in public in Texas. #txlege
Since 2018, 6 of the 9 of the deadliest US mass shootings have been carried out by gunmen under 21, and 18 to 20-year-olds commit gun homicides at triple the rate of adults over 21. Texas is home to 4 of the 10 deadliest US mass shootings and has some of the weakest gun laws.
NEW: A report by @Everytown with @AFTunion and @NEAToday finds the last school year was the most violent and deadly since we began tracking in 2013, with 193 incidents of gunfire on school grounds - nearly four times the average in all other years. everytownsupportfund.org/press/new-ever…
But because most shootings are perpetrated by a student or former student at a school, gun violence can be prevented by keeping guns out of the hands of students: “The hopeful news is that much of this gunfire is actually preventable," @BurdSharps usatoday.com/story/news/nat…
Here are three takeaways from our new report on what schools and governments at all levels can and must do to keep our schools, students and educators safe – as well as what to avoid: everytownresearch.org/report/how-to-…
Schools are opening. Given the amount of gunfire on school grounds last year, gun violence is top of mind for many students. People ask me about how to talk their kids about their fears while also helping them stay and feel safe. Some tips based on experts' advice...
First, it's important to consider the age and maturity of your child. Children are uniquely vulnerable to trauma. There are different stages of childhood development and children’s understanding of complex issues, ideas and the world around them is different from stage to stage.
Also, consider the exposure: while some children may be traumatized by news coverage of school shootings, for many youth in America, gun violence is a daily experience in their communities and they may face physical risk just going to and from school.
.@Everytown just released a new research report detailing how online spaces like @youtube provide not only the extremist ideological motivation for white supremacist attacks, but also the tactical and technical know-how to carry out their attacks. everytownresearch.org/report/armed-e…
.@YouTube isn’t doing enough to moderate videos on its platform that sell or show how to manufacture guns and firearm accessories. We’ve found hundreds of such videos on YouTube, despite them clearly being prohibited by the company’s community guidelines.
“The Buffalo shooter sought out YouTube content to prepare for the attack, including how to illegally modify his weapon, choose body armor, and tactically engage with police. He was entrenched in gun culture on the platform,” @JustinWagner12 at @Everytownvice.com/en/article/3ad…
Conspiracy theories related to the curtailment of Americans’ rights and mass civilian disarmament by government entities - including the FBI - is meant to stoke fear and recruit new members. We must be clear-eyed about these connections and the threats they pose to our safety. 🧵
The NRA’s use of insurrectionist rhetoric goes back to the 1990s when it exploited Ruby Ridge and Waco raids to paint the government as authoritarian, telling members to “take whatever measures necessary, including force, to abolish oppressive government.”washingtonpost.com/archive/politi…
In 1995 - six days after the NRA sent a fundraising letter to its members calling federal agents “jack-booted government thugs” who wanted to take Americans’ guns - Timothy McVeigh bombed a federal building in Oklahoma City that housed an ATF bureau, killing 168 people.
THEY DID IT!!! Last night in the primaries across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Vermont and Connecticut, SIXTEEN @MomsDemand volunteers won and will advance to the general election in November.
