And we may only have a matter of weeks before Julian Assange is extradited to the United States.
Never to be seen again.
The matter is currently in its final stages with an appeal submitted by his legal team to the UK's High Court on 26 August. 1/
🧵
The last bastion, is an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights. However, we know through past experience and from Nils Melzer's book and two-year investigation, that the US, UK and Australia, care little (outside of virtue-signalling) for human rights. 2/
In June, Boris Johnson threatened to withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights (the ‘Convention’) by the time the ECHR appeal happens. Continuing on from this outright attack on human rights protections, a British Bill of Rights (BBR) was introduced— 3/
— by UK justice secretary and deputy prime minister, Dominic Raab. If enacted, this will allow the UK to override any decision by the ECHR and to avoid legislative scrutiny—even from its own parliamentary committees; making it harder to defend human rights. 4/
Speaking of scrutiny, the US will continue to operate above the law and will move swiftly to avoid further backlash and damage to its already faltering public image.
There is no time to waste.
We must demand the immediate release of #JulianAssange 5/
This man is innocent. He is gravely unwell. For the noble and courageous act of bringing truth to power, he has been vilified and tortured and denied justice.
Yet this case is bigger than @wikileaks and Julian Assange. 6/
It is about the importance of the public interest and of protecting our right to know what is done to us and being done by our governments, in our name.
Spread the world. A monumental public uprising is what is needed.
