Annexation of Crimea ("Little green men were locals")
Donbas ("we are not involved", "Genocide")
MH17 ("Ukrainians did it")
Invasion ("Denazification", "war crimes are staged")
Poisoned Skripals ("our guys were just tourists")
...and some still don't notice the pattern? Why?🧵
I guess the reason is, it is almost impossible to keep track of all the disinfo-narratives, fake-stories and distractions produced by the Kremlin's propaganda machine. It seems to me, that some people think that after several lies, there must follow some truth, but that's wrong.
In some cases, if ideology and reality do not fit together at all, good old #whataboutism or #bothsidesism "helps" to solve the dilemma: "all sides are lying", "you can't trust anyone" . Indeed, it is a complex world, you can find lies everywere, but the extent is different.
Is a system based on state controlled propaganda or are we talking about democratic, open societies?
In the moment we equalize totalitarian systems to free countries, our democracy and our sense of reality is on stake.
We are vulnerable to disinformation, not despite but because of our values: Freedom of speech and a sense self criticism that one hand helps us to develop but on the other hand sometimes goes so far that autocracies are able to misuse our confessions against us.
The challenge is, many of us have no clue on how many levels disinformation by non-democratic actors is influencing our mindset, we should better learn fast, until it is too late.

Mai Parade in Kyiv stattfinden muss
" Nein, falsch!
The goal of Russian disinformation is to confuse us and create doubts to an extend until we are not sure what is right or wrong anymore and if our democracy, our way of life is even worth defending.
If someone reached that level, it can be a point of no return🧵
"I don't know what to believe anymore" "everybody is lying" these expressions are clear signs for that stage. Reality is just one of many "opinions" and "who really knows the truth"... often followed by "I am just asking questions"
Creating that state of mind in our societies is an old Soviet strategy.
Russia has decades of experience in subversive activity, the goal is to create a kind of apathy towards our democracy, if you are indifferent you don't see a reason to defend your country and your values.
The myth about the "ethnic conflict" within Ukraine - debunked
"Ukrainian facists were killing ethnic Russians in Donbas" or Ukraine commits "genozide against ethnic Russians in Ukraine"
Nothing about this claim makes any kind of sense (thread)🧵
The first thing we should know, Donbas was never a kind of "ghetto". Ethnic Russians are living in all parts of Ukraine, more than 300.000 in Kyiv and more than 700.000 in Kharkiv Oblast etc.
Much higher numbers of Ukrainians have family ties in Russia (granny "Babushka" etc.)
In Donbas ~40% of the population are ethnic Russians. It is ridiculous to imagine that Ukrainian army was targeting exactly these people when they were actually fighting against Russian proxies/Army in the occupied territory.
They spread 🇷🇺 propaganda-lies on TV because they believe in a "higher cause", it is so naively "Western" to think it is about rational motives like money or "resources"
These actors really believe that "Russia has to lead the world" and "Ukraine is betraying or owing them". 🧵
In Russian state TV they even call the existence of "anything Ukrainian" a threat that needs to be neutralized...even the name "Ukraine" is an "offense", they prefer the term Malorossiya ("Little Russia"). Independent Ukraine they call "Anti-Russia".
Of course, we know the reports about corruption, stealing, "milking" the Russian state, but that should not mislead us to the conclusion that they are just following money, many shady "business people" are not "happy" with the situation.
