Bangalore sits above 2900ft, one have to be master in bad planning to flood a high altitude, rich metro city.
All cities are not made equal, cities like Mumbai & Chennai with their flat terrain, costal tides, heavy rainfall are geographically flood vulnerable. #bangalorerains
I meant, places like Bangalore, flood mitigation is easier & less trivial/complex. You need to follow gradient, valleys.Higher flow speed meant small drain could evacuate more water, it doesn't stagnate in this terrain. Old Bangalore withstood these rain with avg drain system 1/n
Chennai/Mumbai sit in 5-7m height, water flow very slowly, stagnate more. In these "Mega cities", canal depth cant go above 5m(shallow), otherwise sea water will enter the city. They also receive heavy rainfall. So, flood mitigation is non-trivial and complex plan is required 2/n
Lets compare flood rainfall 1. Yesterday few places in Bangalore received ~130mm, many places got 50-100mm in 24hrs 2. 2015, many places in Chennai got 200-350mm, with peak of 490mm near Tambaram 3. 2005, Mumbai got peak of 950mm rainfall in 24hrs. So, cities need to prepare 3/n
Bangalore need to prepare for peak of 120-200mm. Anything >80mm flood the Bangalore new areas.
Chennai need to prepare for 300mm, Mumbai need to prepare for 400+mm. So, with all the advantage of terrain, mitigating flood in Bangalore should be less complex, straight forward 4/n
Coastal towns like Nagapattinam, Udupi are less commercialized, they can withstand very heavy rainfall, without major flood. Same cannot be said about flat costal mega cities. Mumbai/Chennai need much more attention and plan than Bangalore to mitigate flood 5/n
But New areas of Bangalore were permission was granted by BBMP in every level of construction are shame for a city planner. This canal shown in pic, is on the collecting point for 25% of Bangalore area rainfall, it connects Bellandur with Varthur see what happened to it 6/n,
From here onwards my twitter thread on Bangalore drainage will be added 7/n
Cities on river get flood due to water carried by rivers like Ganga in Patna, Tungabhadra in Kurnool, Ulhas in Mumbai, Yamuna in Delhi, Jhelum in Srinagar but Bangalore is in river basin boundary. So no external water enters city. Need channels just to drain its own rainfall 10/n

#TamilNadu comes in top 5 state in India in-terms of Bird diversity. State recorded >560unique bird species(~40% of India). Our hills, wetlands, plains/lakes filled with diverse bird species. This video shows birding in Nilgiris by famous wildlife biologist Surya Ramachandran 1/3
Every stream has its own story from insects, mammals, amphibians, birds..etc. Small stream will inhibit 10000's of insects that keep the forest healthy by controlling un-necessary larva's, mosquitos.etc. This video shows damsels in streams of Nilgiris 2/3
By building dams, we are not just storing the flood, but we are also stopping the small dry month flows, that is the important lifeline of the forest eco-system. Kindly refer Surya Ramachandran YouTube channel to know more about our wildlife. 3/3
As per request. In this long thread, I had added all my twitter threads covering Tamil Nadu's eastern ghats. Its a long thread that covers most of the #EasternGhats
Let start with #Parvathamalai in #Tiruvannamalai dt 1/n
#TamilNadu often seen as a flat/plain state. But TN has the highest land area above 1000m and 2000m height in south India also in "Non-Himalayan" India. TN has 5312sqkm area above 1000m height, 875sqkm land area above 2000m. At the same time, 85% the state lies below 500m. 1/7
Tamil Nadu also has highest number of people living above 2000m in Non-Himalayan India. But when we add Himalayan state, old J&K (incl PoK) has ~1,41,000sqkm area situated above 4000m height😯. Arunachal, Himachal, Uttarakhand all has huge land area above 4000m height. 2/7
#TamilNadu also ecologically a diverse state, with marine reserve, diverse forest type from every green forest to thorny scrub, wetlands/mangroves, coral reeves, rich sand-dunes, large delta. It has 4 sea coast each with unique character, 17 bird sanctuaries. 3/7
It's a long thread abt 1984,Aug 2, Chennai Airport bomb blast killed 33, injured 38. I promise you, It is very interesting. In 1983, saw start of Sri Lankan civil war. 1. Tamil Eelam Army(TEA) Kathiresan & allies wants to put a bomb in the luggage of Air Lanka flight UL-122 1/n
2. Flight UL-122, depart from Chennai Airport at 8.15PM. Bomb was timed at 11 PM, so luggage will be in cargo complex of Colombo Airport, blast is intended to damage Air Lanka properties 3. Two Luggage of accused was tagged in Chennai to reach London & Paris through Colombo 2/n
4. Those days, Indian customs only checks 5% of all luggage's. So accused thought, it will get through the plane without any problem. But due to its weight, the luggage was held by custom officials for checking, As per rules, they check the luggage only in front of the owner. 3/n
Yesterday 4 people died due to Lightning in #Virudhunagar. Every year, >5000 die in India.
This thread is about Lightning precaution & busting myth.
Many think, people die due to direct lightning strike, but most of the death happens due to the concept called step potential 1/10
If a lighting strike ~50ft distance from you. Lightning create potential gradient around its strike point. Voltage will be peak at the strike point and it will start reduce from that point. The electric current will start flowing under the earth. 2/n
If you stand above the ground keeping your two legs apart, it is equal to applying voltage between your two leg. The potential between your legs will make current flow through your body (e.g. current flow from ground to your left leg, hip, right leg then back to the ground), 3/10
