Over the past 20 years, I have honed 5 compounding habits to craft the perfect career (for me).

What makes them special?

They're simple, repeatable, and you can do them in the FLOW of your work.

And you can do most of this work in less than 15min/day.

🧵👇 #Ship30for30
1) Reflect

What’s the fastest way to find the gap between where you are and where you want to be?

Slow down and think.

Success here 100% comes down to this:

• Recognize it's important
• Make it a daily habit
• Book sacred time in your calendar
• Don't overthink it

1/
2) Take Notes in a #PKM

People who succeed here have a system that works FOR THEM.

Here are key considerations:

• Personal structure (you don't think like others)
• Notes about successes & failures
• Searchable
• Daily notes

Tools: @logseq, @obsdmd or @RoamResearch

2/
@logseq @obsdmd @RoamResearch 3) Connect with Others

You can't grow in a bubble.

Introverts and extroverts both need community.

Core to growth is habitually connecting with folks who:

• Can be honest with you
• Have "been there" already
• Can mentor and guide you
• Won't fall for your bullshit

3/
@logseq @obsdmd @RoamResearch 4) Learn Something New

The people who prioritize career growth know something 99% of people don’t.

You can learn ANYTHING.

The faster you adopt this mindset, the more likely you will build new skills, avoid boring work, and become a magnet for work you love.

4/
@logseq @obsdmd @RoamResearch 5) Experiment and Measure Your Progress

Finally, this is the most important habit of all.

All successful career designers can be reduced down to one thing:

They ACT using low risk experiments and then measure the results.

These aren't big tests, but every day you should:
@logseq @obsdmd @RoamResearch • Pick an experiment (ie join a project)
• 🔑 DO SOMETHING (ie work on the project)
• Measure its success (love/meh/hate scale works here)

Then take what you learned and apply it to the next.

Experiment > Measure > Iterate > Repeat
@logseq @obsdmd @RoamResearch TL;DR - 5 daily habits that will compound into your best career.

• Reflection (Think)
• Take notes (Document)
• Engage with others (Connect)
• Learn something new (Grow)
• Test and Track (Experiments)

Over the past 10 years, to advance my career, become a better problem solver and find more meaning at work, I have consumed TONNES of materials on Design Thinking.

If you're getting started, save yourself the time and just read/listen/follow these 🧵👇 #Ship30for30
Book #1: Change By Design

Most people think design is for artists.

This book teaches you how the techniques and strategies of design belong at every level of business.

Book #2: Designing your New Work Life

Many people using Design Thinking at work think it's just for solving org problems.

Using DT principles, this book teaches you how to transform your new, uncharted work life into a meaningful dream job.

The better your notes, the easier it is to manage your boss. Seriously.

Managing up takes planning, communication, relationship building & integrity.

Here are 3 ways to unlock that superpower by simply building a repository of tagged daily notes: 🧵👇🏻 #Ship30for30

1/10
1️⃣ Use Daily Pages to Plan Your Day, Week, Month, Quarter, and Year

Daily Pages ground your thinking to time-based buckets (rather than just project folders).

Reflect on yesterday and plan for today and tomorrow.

2/10
When you reflect and plan, you can focus on what you need from your boss to meet your goals.

When you show your boss you've got the wheel, they won't actually need specifics about little tasks.

That unlocks autonomy, agency, and a higher plane of thinking about your work.

This great thread by @dickiebush got me thinking hard.

Layering career development on top of this framework has real potential: I mean, having a startup mindset is WAY more interesting than doing a career development
plan, amirite?

Small Career Bets

@dickiebush suggests you "make small bets, listen to the data, double-down on what's working, repeat". Yes.

If you look, you will find opportunities to experiment - stretch projects, mentoring, etc.

If your career is a startup, what small-bets do you see?

In my 40s, I started taking control of my career by being more intentional about my work, decisions and attention.

What's the one thing I do that makes this possible?

I use a simple career audit and tracking template that you can steal today.

🧵👇 – 3️⃣/3️⃣0️⃣ #ship30for30
First, some logistics:

1. Use a trusted note-taking system that you can find things in later. I use @RoamResearch

2. Take quick notes in real-time or you WILL forget:
* in 1 hour you forget 50% of new information
* in 24 hours = 70%
* 1 week = 90%. (Murre & Dros, 2015)
I use a 2 part process:

Part 1 is Career Recon: This is all tedium, but the good news is you only have to do it once. Brain dump your career history for safekeeping.

Part 2 is the Career Log: It's quick: log key items to roll up into useful data when you need it.

Talking to yourself compounds your career trajectory.

Stay w/ me.

For 3 years, I've obsessively tweaked tools, info & processes. Turns out I was mastering the art of talking to myself & it's working.

Here are 5 tricks you can use to talk yourself into a great career.

🧵👇 Image
Trick #1: Taking notes IS talking to yourself.

When you take notes, you're having conversations with yourself - reflecting, documenting & planning.

The better the notes, the better the conversation. And, like learning how to have good conversations, it's a muscle to develop. Image
Trick #2: Talk to your 3 Ghosts.

While taking notes, consider the perspective of 3 Ghosts:

• Career Past - reflect on experiences, failures & successes
• Career Present - document what you're doing & how you feel
• Career Future - figure out & plan for what you want Image
