Om Shanti #KrishnamRaju gaaru,in an era when Telugu cinema was dominated by the Big 4- NTR, ANR, Krishna and Shoban Babu he established his own identity as a Rebel Star, Angry Young Man. Worked his way up starting with side roles, villian roles before making it as a hero. Image
His personality, deep voice, acting made him the perfect fit for the intense action roles. Series of hits like Katakatala Rudrayya, Bebulli, Rangoon Rowdy, Bobilli Brahmanna made him a star in his own right. Had a very successful combo with K.Raghavendra Rao, Dasari.
His Antima Teerpu in 1988 is todate one of the best thriller movies in Telugu cinema. He had an excellent combination with Bapu, two memorable movies Bhakta Kannappa and Mana Voori Pandavulu, both big success. #KrishnamRaju
His personality and voice made him really suitable for period epics like Tandra Paparayudu based on Bobilli Yuddham and Viswanatha Nayakudu where he bought to life the great emperor Shri Krishna Deva Raya on screen. #KrishnamRaju
One memorable movie was Bhakta Kannappa, based on the story of the tribal devotee of Shiva, who offers his eyes to him. Movie also brings out the legend begin Sri Kaalahasti. One of his best performances. #KrishnamRaju
He was equally good in emotional roles like in Amara Deepam, breaking away from his usual angry young man image. Also was twice BJP MP, served as Union Minister. With him gone, only Krishna is left now as the last surviving member of the generation that dominated TFI once.
Apart from his movie career #KrishnamRaju gaaru as MP had passed the bill to prevent Cow Slaughter in Parliament in 2000. Not many know this about him. Respect for him in this aspect.

#TodayInHistory Operation Polo begins in 1948, the military action or rather "police action" which ensured Hyderabad would not end up as another Kashmir. This thread takes a look at the events leading up to it, as well as the backdrop. Image
The State of Hyderabad stretched from Aurangabad in the North West to Mahbubnagar in the South East, from Adilabad in the North East to Raichur in the South West. It covered the present day Marathwada in Maharashtra, Northern Karnataka, and the Telangana region.
It had a population of 16.34 million as per the 1941 census, the majority of whom were Hindu, around 85%, with Muslims making up 12% and the rest being Christians, Sikhs, Parsis. Though predominantly Telugu speaking , it had fairly good number of Kannada, Marathi, Urdu speakers.

#TodayInHistory 21 Sikhs face off a huge Afghan army at the epic Battle of Saragarhi in 1897, that would go down as one of the great last man stands in history, on par with Rezang La, Thermopayle, Alamo, Charge of the Light Brigade to name a few. Image
To understand the significance of Saragarhi, one needs to take a look at the backdrop. The Afridi tribe had a deal with the British to protect the strategically important Khyber Pass for 16 years, who in turn created a local regiment composed of the Afridis entirely.
However the Afridi tribesmen, turned against the British, and began to capture all the outposts in the Khyber, espeically on the Samana Range near Peshawar. Saragarhi was one of the posts, here, manned by the Sikhs. The British started the Tirah campaign in response.

Err no, Cholas had a full standing navy, they invaded Sri Lanka, South East Asia. I have all the respect for Shivaji and Marathas, but to say the Cholan fleet was mainly involved in trading, is absolute lazy analysis, no don't take refuge in semantics now.
The Cholas had a very complex classification system in their navy that was introduced by Raja Raja Chola I, and later his son.
The four main classes were

Dharani- The equivalent of destroyers, used for combat on the sea. They could last up to 3 months, traveled in groups, avoided one to one combat.

In my series on the 1965 War, today I take a look at the Battle of Haji Pir, where the Indian Army secured the mountain pass, in the toughest of conditions.
Haji Pir Pass, a mountain pass located on the Western Pir Panjal range at an altitude of 8652 feet. It was the site of two major battles between India and Pakistan during the 1948, 65 Wars.
The backdrop to the battle was Operation Gibraltar, Pakistan’s clandestine attempt to infiltrate guerillas into Kashmir and destablize the region. However the Operation ended in a fiasco, as the local population did not assist the Pakistani forces.
