We’re @TheAusInstitute, one of Australia’s most influential public policy think tanks. We're proudly independent and we barrack for ideas, not political parties.
Here’s a thread of our recent work across some of the biggest issues facing Australia and the world today
⏬🧵#auspol
It's perfectly legal to lie in a political ad. It shouldn't be. Our research consistently finds 4 in 5 Australians want truth in political advertising laws.
“Don’t let Australia wreck Glasgow COP26” - calling out the Federal Government’s fixation on fossil fuels
The full story behind how much tax mining companies pay (spoiler: it’s not enough)
The Big Gas Swindle: how gas companies make record profits while Australians pay the price.
A windfall profits tax would help us claw back some of these gas companies’ record profits (explained by Executive Director Richard Denniss)
Australia needs a disaster levy on fossil fuel exports to help pay for some of the increasing costs of climate disasters, (we made a TV commercial promoting our research)
Numerous parliamentary scandals have eroded trust in government & democracy. 59 eminent Australians, former Judges & members of the legal fraternity penned an open letter to then PM Scott Morrison, calling for the urgent establishment of a National ICAC.
We conducted the largest and most comprehensive domestic study of cronyism in relation to appointments to a government agency ever in Australia, and found that political appointments to the AAT have skyrocketed, from 5-6 in 100 to 2 in every 5.
Here’s a quick explainer of fuel efficiency standards, and how they can save us money and reduce emissions.
Research economist @ElizaLittleton gives a rundown of the legislated stage 3 tax cuts, and how they will mainly benefit rich older men)
Recent Australia Institute research shows that profits, not wages, are driving inflation.

Executive Director Richard Denniss @RDNS_TAI unpacks how much our governments are spending to hold up the gas industry (and how that money could be better spent.)
Claims that Australia’s emissions are falling are questionable at best.
Climate & Energy Director @RichieMerzian shows the real story behind the political spin.
As an independent think-tank, we do not accept funding from political parties. Without your support, none of this work would be possible. Become a supporter here: nb.australiainstitute.org.au/donate

Will it be a climate budget? Probably not.

Many of the pre-announced ‘climate’ measures support fossil fuels, and the adaptation measures carefully avoid referring to ‘climate change’. #auspol #Budget2021

So, what do we know so far?

[THREAD 🧵👇]
ANNOUNCEMENT ONE //
$58.6 million to advance ‘Australia’s gas-fired recovery’
minister.industry.gov.au/ministers/tayl…
Minister Taylor claims gas “helps to support our manufacturing sector that employs over 900,000 Australians”- but only 0.56% of those workers work in gas intensive industries on the east coast.

"In polling today, Australians are more concerned about climate change. Do you think since the fires people's concerns about climate change have shifted & that now requires stronger action"

The PM's response? More claims we're "meeting and beating" our emissions targets🙄#auspol
The bushfire crisis has intensified concern about climate change and its impacts #auspol #AustraliaBurning

This morning on @RNBreakfast, Craig Kelly repeated the false claim (first made by the PM) that Australia ranks 1st globally per capita on renewable energy investment, which is both misleading and incorrect. #AustraliaIsBurning #auspol
A thread:
@RNBreakfast 1/ Analysis of the data provided by the Department of Energy in support of the Prime Minister’s claim shows Australia is not 1st but 3rd among just 23 countries for clean energy investment per capita
@RNBreakfast 2/ Looking at just the year 2018, the Department of Energy admits Australia is actually only second -- not first -- when it comes to 2018 renewable energy investment per capita, among a select group of 30 countries, not the whole world.

Yet another breakdown at NSW’s vintage Liddell coal power station, on cue to celebrate Angus Taylor's brand new Liddell taskforce.

Proving yet again that replacing it with renewables + storage is the only way to ensure reliable power for NSW. #gasandcoalwatch #auspol
The Minister for Energy and Emission Reductions today announced a taskforce that could see the Liddell coal fired power station open for longer, including through taxpayer money.
afr.com/companies/ener…
Liddell is the oldest power station in Australia. It predates colour tv, and keeps breaking down.

In 2018 Liddell units broke down or dropped out 11 times without notice -- more than any other coal power station in NSW. #auspol #gasandcoalwatch
