Here's why supporting #WomeninTech is crucial for equal opportunity.

P.S It's not just a pipeline issue.

Thread🧵
#1 The problem

The problem with the tech industry is that biases against women...

1. Make it harder for women to get hired.

2. Make it harder for women to pitch their startup idea.

Here are some studies that show this:
#2 A study by HBS, Wharton, and MIT Sloan found:

> Investors preferred startup ventures pitched by a man than an identical pitch from a woman by 68% to 32%.

Same pitch, different result...

Only because of the gender by the Entrepreneur.
#3 Psychology faculty were sent CVs for an applicant (randomly assigned male or female name).

Men and women were much likelier to hire a male applicant than a female applicant with an identical record.

Identical record, different result.
Again, because of the gender.
#4 Science Faculty hiring study by @Yale

Applications randomly assigned a male name were rated more:

- Competent
- Hirable.

They were also offered a higher starting salary & more career mentoring compared to identical applications assigned female names.
@Yale #5

The problem isn't admitting we have a bias.

The problem - is trying to hide it - to appear unbiased - when we are not.

When we acknowledge our bias, we can still work on eliminating them.
@Yale #6 Yale Study

When the male applicants had more formal education than the females:

Evaluators decided that formal education was the most important trait.

But when female applicants had more formal education:

They decided that street smarts were the most important trait.
@Yale #7 But why does this happen?

Subconscious bias we have developed through culture.

As we saw in some of the studies above... It can happen that both men, and women, can have a bias against women.
@Yale #8 How do we solve it?

There will never be an overnight solution.

But what we CAN do:

1. Raise awareness around the bias.

2. Train managers, and raise awareness to investors.
