There’s a lot of anger around @Mermaids_Gender right now from Gender Critical people, who’ve never used it.
I have. So let me tell you what they’re actually like. Between the age of 15 and 17, I was hiding my gender identity even when I didn’t really want to.
Why did I hide it? I didn’t have the confidence to come out. I didn’t know anyone like me. I didn’t know who I could talk to. I was scared, and alone.
But I spoke to mermaids. I was nervous about making the phone call with them. I didn’t want anyone to find out.
So, I went to a field. A field I’ve returned to often. It’s a nice place to think. It’s a place I can almost guarantee I’ll be alone. And then I made that phone call. I spoke to someone who understood me. Sure if spoken to a couple people anonymously, but it’s not the same.
Hearing someone who actually knew the right things to say was a lifeline. It gave me hope. It made me feel less like a freak. Normal even. I still have emails from back then, before I was really me.
I didn’t even use mermaids as much as I could’ve done.
But just that phone call made a huge difference in my coming out and transition. And I can’t thank them, and all the other people that supported me in my journey to being who I really am.
Sometimes I see Gender Critical people say to me that, whilst I am happy as a trans person right now, I’ll probably detransition in the future. This kind of narrative is surprisingly common. Even when I’ve stated nothing that would suggest I’m even unhappy with my transition…
…let alone considering detransition.
It’s almost like they want me to detransition, even when I’ve said I’m happy that I transitioned.
It’s a harmful narrative, whilst no one should be pressured into transitioning, equally no one should be pressured into detransitioning.
Especially when they’re happy.
Young trans people, like me, are often happy in who we are. Detransitioners deserve love, support, understanding healthcare.
I don’t see how pushing happy trans people, especially young trans people, to detransition helps anyone.
It is true, that liberalism believes in free speech by virtue of wanting the state to stay out of our lives. This has been a thing for a long time but is especially strong in more classical liberalism. The modern liberal alternative doesn’t see the state in the same way.
Because of course, the state shouldn’t be policing ‘wrongthink’ but I’m sure we can all agree that free speech has its limits.
For example I doubt that we would agree that libel should be legal.
I also believe that harassment should not be legal, and yes that includes…
As we all know parties are political entities of people of similar political ideas. Some viewpoints are fundamental to a party, for example the Scottish national party supporting independence or the Green Party supportive the environment.

Members at low level however can change this policy through voting in party policy. However it would make sense for that the executive and any candidates at the very least agree with the most important aspects of a political party.
