This day in 1939, the Football League was suspended due to the outbreak of the Second World War.
The Luftwaffe almost decimated the Polish town of Wielun on September 1, destroying more than 75% of the city and killing nearly 1,200 inhabitants. Two days later, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain declared war on the Nazis.
On 14 September, the British government announced that professional football under the umbrella of the Football League was to be stopped. However, establishment of separate regional leagues but with a fifty-mile travel limit was allowed.
The average attendance at stadiums took a huge toll as spectators were limited to just 8,000 which was later increased to 15,000.
The 1st season of wartime football saw 10 diff leagues established across Britain including two in the North, one in the East Midlands, one in the South West, one in the West Midlands, two in London & two in Scotland, which were divided into Western and Eastern Divisions.
The FA Cup was of course suspended as well but a Football League War Cup was invented so that the fans would continue to experience the magic of a cup competition.
The clubs and the leagues went through constant change throughout the war. As many players joined the Territorial Army to lend a hand in the war effort, clubs were forced to invite guest players to fill up the ranks. From 1929 to 1945, 784 footballers joined the British army.
The Football League returned for the 1946-47 season with its pre-war structure – First Division, Second Division and the Division 3 North and South.

The top flight saw Liverpool win their fifth league title, finishing just one point above rivals Manchester United. #LFC #MUFC

🚨 Thread 🚨

Established in 1970, the Urdu Library of Orissa at Buxi Bazar, Cuttack, was once a hub for students from all walks of life.

Now, it lies dilapidated. ⬇️ Image
Located right in the vicinity of Stewart School and Stewart Science College, the library is also quite close to St Joseph's, SB Women's College, New Stewart, Christ College, St Xavier's, Cambridge, etc.

Very convenient for students to pick up books without having to travel far.
The earliest patrons of the library included Dr Radhanath Rath, freedom fighter, writer and Moinuddin Ahmed, IAS, among others.

A Trust was set up to oversee its operations but the library has been lying abandoned for many years now. ImageImage

Buxi Bazar lalmohanpatnaik.tumblr.com/post/695371776…

Excellent piece on the popular misconception that Buxi Bazar is named after Buxi Jagabandhu.

The name and the locality predates the freedom fighter. It's named after Mir Bakshi, a Mughal administrator.
"A letter written by an Acting Magistrate of Cuttack to his higher authority in 1814 indicates that the area was named as Bukshee Bazar prior to the beginning of Paika Rebellion and much before the coming of Bakshi Jagabandhu to Cuttack."
"Acting Magistrate of Cuttack M Ainsle wrote the letter to George Dowdeswell Esquire, Chief Secretary to Government, Fort William. The letter indicated the demographic structure and names of localities of the then capital town of Orissa."

This day in 1885, in a Scottish Cup first round fixture, Dundee Harp beat Aberdeen Rovers 35-0.

A ridiculous score-line, obviously, but it still was not the highest scoring match of the day. ⬇️ Image
Twenty miles away, in the same competition, Bon Accord FC lost 36-0 to Abroath FC.

However, Bon Accord were not a football team but an Aberdonian cricket club known as Orion Cricket Club.
They had mistakenly received a Scottish Cup invitation that was originally meant for Orion FC. The cricketers took the name Bon Accord to enter the tournament.

Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri and Minister of Information & Broadcasting Mrs Indira Gandhi with Bhairab Mahanti during a Barabati Raffle prize distribution ceremony in New Delhi in 1964.

A tiny 🚨 thread 🚨 on how a small town lottery received nationwide attention. ⬇️
We all know how the idea for a sports stadium in Odisha came about. If you don't know, I've got you covered. ⬇️

As soon as plans were set for a new stadium, Messrs Bhairab Mahanti, Joe Hyde, Sailen Roy and Mihir Rao sat together to discuss possible sources of funds.

Days of fervent talks did not birth any tangible ideas. That's when Roy suggested a lottery.

🚨 Thread 🚨

Almost every Odia household has this calendar called 'Panji'. It's not just a calendar but also an ephemeris, a book of tables that gives the coordinates of a celestial object at specific times.

It's venerated as sacred in Hinduism & is produced by a Muslim family.
These days there are many Panjis to choose from but this one in particular, thr Kohinoor Press panji, is considered to be the most authentic. It even has a nod of approval from the Jagannath Temple in Puri.
The Kohinoor Press was started by Sk Aminul Islam in the Qadam-e-Rasool area in Darghah Bazaar, Cuttack.

The press printed its first copy of the Odia panji in 1935 after getting the nod from the Mukti Mandap Pandit Sabha, the highest religious body of the Jagannath Temple.
