DAY THREE of the Hodlonaut v Craig Wright Trial in OSLO 🇳🇴
REPORTING LIVE tweet recaps all day 🧵👇
Court is in session - Hodlonaut is taking the stand now.
Judge has clarified the expectation for truth - including to not omit relevant details. Now both teams of lawyers will ask their questions of Hodlonaut - and the judge also mentioned she may ask some questions of her own after both parties have finished their own questioning.
Going through the personal backstory of hodlonaut's discovery of bitcoin and what most attracted him to it (decentralization - he never idolized Satoshi), timeline of his twitter adoption - as well as when he first learned about CSW (2015).
After his initial impressions of CSW (not how he'd estimated Satoshi), hodlonaut cites a @guarian article from 2016 - summarized in court "supposed bitcoin inventor is a fraud" - and shares there is a general widespread consensus that CSW is a fraud. theguardian.com/technology/201…
After a brief explanation of being a taco pleb - hodlonaut explained bitcoin maximalism quite succinctly and mentions "bitcoin maximalist" was initially an insult but bitcoiners embraced this toxicity. "Toxicity is a form of brutal honesty - not accepting any compromise."
Now we are going through the timeline of the initiation of the legal proceedings.
Pausing for a 10m court break
We're back - and now Manshaus (CSW lawyer) will ask hodlonaut questions.
Much back and forth with Manshaus and hodlonaut about tweets, tone, and consequences of actions. Hodlonaut says he replied to CSW in the same way CSW was tweeting.
"What are we talking about here?" says the judge.
Discussing Calvin Ayre - economic interest in BSV and the BSV bounty that was placed on hodlonaut's doxxing - who placed it (Craig or Calvin) and what the motivation was.
Mansaus then brought up a smattering of other tweets from hodlonaut's twitter not related at all to CSW or bitcoin but about his personal views on current issues.
Seemingly to discredit hodlonaut and his character since he is not supporting the current thing.
👀
Talking now about the #WeAreAllHodlonaut campaign dating back to early April of 2019 - initiated by various online bitcoin community groups (telegram, etc.) to help protect hodlonaut from being doxxed.
Judge has just pointed out that hodlonaut has been also defamed (citing various names hodlonaut has been called by the BSV crowd) and asked why is it worse to be called a crypto troll or fraud?
Hodlonaut has now completed questioning and now Craig Wright is taking the stand. Judge explained that it is a punishable offense to lie on the stand.
"Do you swear to tell the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?" -Judge
"I do solemnly affirm and swear to that." -CSW
Manshaus is asking CSW about the various tweets in this case from hodlonaut and CSW's thoughts about the various accusations: scammer, fraud - as well as how he's been effected by the tweets calling him mentally ill, etc.
CSW is brining up threats of physical harm and other violent references to his personhood from others calling him a fraud - not coming from hodlonaut.
CSW says that if hodlonaut would have initiated a discussion an amicable agreement could have been reached. The initial letter CSW sent to hodlonaut stipulated that hodlonaut publicly admit that CSW is Satoshi.
After discussing insults CSW has said about @peterktodd & @lopp, Manshaus asked CSW about his use of strong language to which CSW said, "When I'm being insulted and attacked sometimes I overreact."
Manshaus has now moved on to CSW's personal background. Once again bringing up his family relationships, early interest in coding, Japanese culture, and his previous companies/jobs.
Breaking now for 45 minute lunch.
We're back in session. CSW is still on the stand - Manshaus is still going through his line of questions.
Manshaus is citing various pages of handwritten notes of CSW. At the top of a page is a handwritten "Aug 2007." the first line has a crossed out "Electronic Cash" and the word Bitcoin is written above it. When asked when that edit was made, CSW said much later - after 2009/2010.
CSW said he's been using the pseudonym "Satoshi Nakamoto" since 2005. Manshaus asked if the witnesses that will be called in this trial will be able to testify to this or corroborate that CSW wrote the Whitepaper. CSW said some, yes. But others don't want to be involved.
“I have never changed or manipulated any documents nor have I ever instructed a third party to change documents on my behalf.” - CSW
We're now once again reviewing the Gavin Andresen signing/proofing session from London.
10 minute break - and then Hodlonaut's lawyers will question CSW.
We're back!
Hodlonaut's lawyer started off asking about CSW's claim to have never been convicted. Pulled up CSW wikipedia page and cited a contempt of court conviction. CSW explained that that's not a criminal offense in Austraila but that he did serve the community service.
Now we've been reviewing numerous emails, files, documents and checking whether they're real or manipulated. Hodlonaut's lawyer asked if there are any real documents. CSW said, "Yes, there are some real documents."
Not sure when they will present these real documents...
Q: Do you have access to these private keys at this point of time?
A: No.
Q: Did you at any point in time?
A: Yes, I created the algorithm.
Now discussing trust documents - and trustees. Very hard to follow what is being said.
Judge: Is this document forged?
CSW: This page has nothing to do with any of my trusts.
Everybody in court seems confused...
CSW rants that bitcoin is not encrypted. He wants the judge and the court to understand that bitcoin can be seized, bitcoin can be frozen, and bitcoin can be accessed under court order.
getting heated in here now
"I don’t even care about the Satoshi keys" - CSW
"Satoshi never had 1.1 million BTC. That’s a calculation done by someone on the web and that’s wrong." - CSW
CSW says he is not going to attempt to decrypt the private keys to do a signing to prove he is Satoshi. He says his time talking and emailing with Gavin is what proves he is Satoshi.
Just had a very unproductive discourse about this Sartre blog between CSW and hodlonaut's lawyer (Haukaas).
Now we're reviewing more emails (to Gavin Andresen) - and CSW continues to say they're not sent by him.
"I hate Silicon Valley... It is evil. I’d kill myself before I gave myself to Google. You think a billion dollars is worth selling my frickin’ soul?" - CSW
(said VERY passionately)
Judge Q to wrap up the CSW interview:
Q: Help me understand why that proofing session with Andresen was more emotionally difficult than documenting you are Satoshi?
A: It's not emotionally difficult - well, NOW it isn't - but it's harder to do. Chasing down witnesses..."
And that concludes day THREE of the trial. Will be going live with @BitcoinMagazine at 1pm ET. Will add link 👇

Court is in session. CSW's lawyer is beginning his opening remarks.
CSW Lawyer presents the agreement of both parties that defamation has occurred - and then proceeds to outline the differences of freedom of speech and responsibility for what is said.
Talks about the purpose of freedom of speech and proposes it should be to search for truth and to facilitate debate.
@hodlonaut's lawyer has been presenting the case. Starting with a brief overview/light explanation of #Bitcoin and then a timeline of evidence against Craig Wright's assertion to be Satoshi Nakamoto.
This case in Oslo is about multiple tweets by @hodlonaut from 2019 asserting that Craig Wright is a fraud (not Satoshi). CSW requested the tweets be deleted and also a statement be issued that he is in fact Nakamoto. While the tweets were deleted - no statement was issued.
The purpose of this trial is to assess to the degree that @hodlonaut's tweets were damaging - not to ultimately rule whether or not Craig Wright is Satoshi - but to do that fairly requires the judge to come to an understanding of whether or not CSW is Satoshi.
