At 23 I got my first remote job as a Mobile Software Engineer.

A particular local bank didn't want to open a US bank account for me.

They thought I was a scammer. 😔

Here's the crazy story of how it went down in the thread below 🧵🧵🧵
The year is 2016 and after months of applying, I have landed my first remote role.

Bustling with happiness, I take a taxi to Old Harbour Square, printed offer letter in hand to open my first US account. Image
Entering the bank, I grab a ticket and await my number.

Finally, it is my turn.

I tell the bank rep that I want to open a US account and I show the offer letter.

Bank rep: "Unfortunately, I don't believe that letter is real."

I am "shooketh" 😓😓😓😓😓

@yaneekpage Hi Yaneek! Great questions. I am actually working on a comprehensive guide on Learning How To Code in 2022 as we speak, that I plan to release as a thread or video that will go in-depth. Once it is done I will link it here for more awareness. I will answer the questions below.
@yaneekpage 1. From a training path standpoint, I would recommend that they follow a guided program that is well resourced and has a community behind it. Self-learning is no easy feat therefore subscribing to a guide will make things easier.
@yaneekpage 2. My favorite resource is freecodecamp.org because it has several programs that will allow one to get certified and it is free. It also has a forum for questions and other conversations forum.freecodecamp.org . Youtube, Udacity & Coursera also offer several courses.

I will be sharing the 10 guiding principles I utilized to level up from being a Junior Developer of an app with 250 users to a Senior Software Engineer powering apps with over 100 million downloads.

This comprehensive thread dives into the details 🧵
1. Be realistic about where you are.

“If you don't know where you are going any road can take you there” - Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland.

Before I applied to a job or pushed a single line of code to open source I always assessed my skills.
"The less you know, the more confident you are. The more you know, the less confident you are" - the Dunning-Kruger effect.

I was the former. Assessing myself allowed me to get a real idea of the expertise the international market required so I could improve where necessary.

I had one of the coolest experiences at @amazon go. A supermarket powered by AI where there are no lines or checkouts. You grab the stuff you want and go [ Thread ]
So to get inside you go to the Amazon go app and scan your barcode and it opens.
Once you are inside you can pick up whatever you want and the cameras above you will know what you got.
