🧵My suspension has been rescinded! You have no idea how relieved I am! I am grateful to the many journalism organizations & people who supported my students & me throughout this ordeal. Yes, I wore this #FirstAmendment shirt to my appeal meeting on Zoom today. (1/6) Image
A special shoutout goes to @SPLC for their continued support & guidance since December of 2021. This is how long this censorship issue has been going on. The district should never have attempted to censor my students & discipline me. (2/6)

The district never should have tried to censor my students & retaliate against me. 1 of my mentors, Konnie Krislock, is a strong proponent of CA Ed Code 48907 & was instrumental in getting Section G added, which protected journalism teachers (3/6 ) laist.com/news/education…
All along, I knew we were in the right & I'm proud of my students for holding their ground, too. Unfortunately, not many states have laws like California's to protect student journalists, much less their advisers. In the past 2 weeks, I heard many stories of people who were (4/6)
censored while on their high school newspapers. I heard from advisers who were intimidated by their administrators. Some didn't have their contracts renewed & some left advising journalism or teaching all together.
(5/6)
I hope my ordeal has raised awareness of California's Ed Code 48907 and its protection for journalism teachers. I also hope that other states adopt similar laws to protect their journalism students. #firstamendment #EdCode48907 #censorship (6/6)
However, there are 2 other issues LAUSD still needs to address: deferring my performance evaluation & issuing a written statement saying the district will abide by Constitutional and state laws that protect student journalists & their advisers. (7/8)
The day after my suspension was handed down, I got a notice that I was being evaluated this school year. My principal is the only admin on my campus so he would be evaluating me. While I know I am a good teacher, I don't feel comfortable having him evaluate me this year.🤷🏽‍♀️ (8/8)
Posting this again: If you want to support my students & their publications, you can donate & be a sponsor. Thx to donations in the past few weeks, we raise enough to pay for our website for the year & printing costs for
our one magazine issue. drive.google.com/file/d/1k78Uo9…
If you don't want your name published or a magazine mailed, just let us know. drive.google.com/file/d/1k78Uo9…
And if you're feeling generous, please donate to @SPLC. They offer guidance to many journalism students & advisers every day. Not all of those calls make the news. My students have called them several times over the years seeking guidance & advice.

Yesterday, I was given a 3-day unpaid suspension over a censorship issue surrounding a story my students published last fall. With guidance from @SPLC, my student editors have stood up for their First Amendment rights & I've supported their decisions. (1/4)
For those who don't know, CA has Education Code 48907 says: "Pupils of the public schools, including charter schools, shall have the right to exercise freedom of speech and of the press including, but not limited to, the use of bulletin boards, the distribution of...(2/4)
And this is specifically for journalism teachers: "48907 (g): An employee shall not be dismissed, suspended, disciplined, reassigned, transferred, or otherwise retaliated against solely for acting to protect a pupil engaged in the conduct authorized under this section,..."(3/4)
