We have new updates from @DOE_CESER on the impacts of Hurricane #Fiona and what's happening on the ground in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Here's what you need to know. #thread
First, I want to be clear that this is an extremely dynamic situation with numbers and factors constantly changing.

The information captured here is a snapshot of where things stood at different times today, as captured in @DOE_CESER's Situational Report. (2/)
DOE response personnel have been activated and are on the ground in Puerto Rico & the US Virgin Islands to assess the disaster’s impacts to the energy sector, restore energy systems to full capacity, & identify any unmet needs that may require federal support or coordination (3/)
As of 2 PM ET today, 93% of customers in Puerto Rico are without power.

Since the island-wide power outage began yesterday afternoon, approximately 108,000 customers have had their power restored.

1.37 million are still experiencing outages. (4/)
Since our snapshot, Puerto Rico’s transmission and distribution operator has reported additional restorations of power. (5/)
As of 10:30 AM ET today, 10% of customers (5,500) in the U.S. Virgin Islands are without power.

That's down from a storm peak of 14,000 outages.

We should expect to see fluctuations in these numbers as part of large-scale restoration efforts across the region. (6/)
As conditions permit, damage assessments & restoration efforts are expected to get underway today.

Due to the magnitude of the outage + ongoing impacts of #Fiona, the local transmission/distribution operator estimates full power restoration will take at least several days. (7/)
That's all for now. @ENERGY will continue to monitor the situation and will work closely with partners on the ground to get electrical services back as quickly as possible.

Follow @DOE_CESER @FEMA @FEMAespanol @femaregion2 @NWSSanJuan for more.

Please stay safe. (8/8)

#Ukraine nuclear facilities update: @ENERGY continues to monitor the situation. We remain concerned about Russia’s reckless actions and violations of nuclear safety principles. 1/
Thankfully, radiation monitors in much of Ukraine still function, and we have not detected any signs of radiological release. 2/
I spoke yesterday with @rafaelmgrossi and thanked him for @IAEAorg efforts to remedy the safety situation; we will continue to support those efforts. 3/

An update on #Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine: @ENERGY analysis shows the loss of power does not pose a near-term risk of radiological release. 1/
We support @IAEAorg assessment that while there is no critical impact on safety, loss of power to the facility violates a key safety pillar. 2/
While there is no near-term risk to public health, these latest developments are another example of Russia’s extraordinarily reckless and dangerous actions. 3/

UPDATE: Russian forces are in control of the Zaphorizhizia nuclear plant, and we call on Russia to allow the Ukrainian operators to continue to operate safely – including allowing shift changes at both Zaphorizhizia and Chornobyl. 1/
The Ukrainian operators were extremely responsible in how they responded to yesterday’s appalling attack by safely taking 2 of the reactors offline. They currently have 1 reactor operating at partial capacity to keep the power grid stable. 2/
It’s important to understand that the Zaphorizhizia nuclear plant is designed to withstand significant shelling or bombardment. We have seen no elevated radiation readings overnight. Safety systems are intact, and reactors continue to receive cooling. 3/

Just wrapped an incredible trip to Mexico where @USAmbMex and I met with senior Mexican leadership, including President @LopezObrador, and industry, legislators, and civil society. Thank you for frank and respectful conversations. 1/ (Thread) 🇺🇸🇲🇽 energy.gov/articles/state…
Thank you to the Mexican gov’t, including @RocioNahle and @Claudiashein, for the warm welcome & open dialogue about a joint energy future. The U.S. greatly values our relationship with MX & sees tremendous promise for renewable energy to propel North American competitiveness. 2/
In each meeting, we expressly conveyed the Biden-Harris Administration’s real concerns with the potential negative impact of Mexico’s proposed energy reforms on U.S. private investment in Mexico. energy.gov/articles/state…
