New @RadiologyACR#Government#Relations comments in response to an @NIH#RFI on the feasibility of public private partnerships to address pediatric medical device needs ie lack of access to #healthcare#AI for pediatric patients
Action is urgently needed since almost all #AI in radiology has been developed for #Adults and hasn't been shown to work for pediatric patients. Here's what is recommended 🧵
1. Advocate for funding to develop #Pediatric radiology datasets that could be used for training, testing, and validation of radiology #AI
2. Validation and/or re-training of existing @US_FDA cleared adult AI software (#SaMD) for use on pediatric patients via NIH and/or public-private partnership funded studies
3. Fund new AI R&D in federal research & regulatory agencies, prioritizing and supporting #pediatric AI development since currently, pediatric AI development is rarely perceived as worth the #ROI by #industry
4. Identify & enact AI payments models in @CMSGov and legislative financial incentives that could promote development of #pediatric#AI
5.Prioritize @US_FDA regulatory agency review and resources for pediatric AI devices
6.Promote transparency in @US_FDA labelling, such as consistently providing data on patients’ demographics, including ages of patients used in the development and testing of @US_FDA authorized #AI#SaMD
7.Explore decision support alerts or other automatic fail-safes to prevent adult #AI from unwittingly being used on #pediatric patients
