USA Today reported that the Dept. of #Veterans Affairs estimates that 9️⃣7️⃣% of its employees CONTINUE WORK during a shutdown. According to the VA's contingency plan, here's what services WILL NOT BE IMPACTED:
🔹 VA #Medical Centers, Outpatient Centers & Vet Centers will REMAIN OPEN, providing ALL services.
🔹 #VA benefits will continue to be PROCESSED & DELIVERED, including compensation, #pension, education & #housing benefits.
🔹 Burials WILL CONTINUE at VA cemeteries.
🔹 The Board of Veterans' Appeals WILL CONTINUE decisions on veterans' cases.
🔹 VA's primary call center & the Veterans #Crisis Line will REMAIN OPEN 24/7. The VA Benefit Hotline will REMAIN OPEN Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. ET.
🔹 #Suicide prevention programs, #homelessness services & #caregiver support WILL CONTINUE.

According to the Dept. of #Veterans Affairs’ contingency plan, the following services ARE IMPACTED during a shutdown:
🔹 VA will STOP providing transition program assistant & #career counseling.
🔹 VA's GI Bill & National Cemetery Applicant Assistance hotlines will be CLOSED.
🔹 VA benefits regional offices will be CLOSED.
🔹 Public affairs & outreach to #veterans will CEASE, including #socialmedia, VetResources emails & responses to #press inquires.
🔹 NO grounds maintenance or placement of permanent headstones at VA cemeteries.
🔹 Applications for pre-need burial at VA cemeteries WON’T BE PROCESSED.
🔹 NO printing of new Presidential Memorial Certificates.
🔹 NO outreach to state, county, tribal, municipal, faith-based & community-based partners by VA Center Office.

@MilitaryTimes reported: “The errors caused by the federal worker included improper payments to #veterans, violations of regulations that could affect veterans’ benefits & procedural deficiencies, the report found.”

📌 The blind approvals occurred from at least fiscal year 2022 through 2024, when the employee was found to have authorized about 85,300 claims — 19 times the national average, & at an 84% error rate.

📌 “The full magnitude of the incorrectly disbursed payments has not been assessed, with $2.2 million being only a current estimate. The report states that the Veterans Benefit Administration is working to correct the errors by year’s end.” #DisabledVeterans

These are highlights from a July 2025 report from the Government Accounting Office (#GAO) about timely #military discharge upgrade decisions.

MILITARY DISCHARGE: Actions Needed to Help Ensure Consistent & Timely Upgrade Decisions
📌GAO Found Service members separated from the military without an honorable discharge can apply to a post-separation review board for a possible discharge upgrade due to a potential error or injustice in the process.

📌In 2014 & 2017, the Department of #Defense (DOD) directed these boards to give “liberal consideration” to applications from veterans with a qualifying mental health condition, such as post-traumatic stress disorder or an experience of sexual #harassment or sexual assault connected to their service.

📌 DODs’ post-separation review boards have implemented liberal consideration &, from January 2018 through March 2024, applied it to more than 21,000 discharge upgrade cases.
